FL Need Advice

Sorry guys, but I am so indecisive. I guess it's bc I'm trying to distinguish pros and cons for both short term and longterm goals.

I have an 85 GS (w/ a 12A) and just like everyone else I'm trying to get more hp. Any opinions or advice on whether to decide to do a blowthrough turbo or do a TII swap? Is one gonna be harder to complete ie more parts and labor, more expensive, more difficult to maintain etc etc? I don't know much about the blowthroughs, but I do know I'd like to keep somewhat decent gas mileage, so not really interested in porting unless all that stays the same.

I'd just really like it if yall could throw some pros and cons at me

Thanks,
Calvin

what is your budget, time frame, fab skill, hp goal, ect.

is it your daily driver?? what will the car be used for?? are you shure that you want to go turbo??

both will cost more then you think and take longer then you think......

that being sed.. blowthrough = cheep..er tii= more hp and better mpg.

fyi.. i have a blow through setup on my 7.

It's my daily driver, but during the project I will have another car to drive so times not a big deal. As far as my budget goes, $5000 is probably a good guess, give or take a little, but that's going to include labor costs bc I'm not able to do the mods myself. I'm still hesitant on the turbo bc most of the reading I've done in the forum refers to gsl-se's having turbos, where having the gs i would obviously need to do more mods, but idk exactly which ones. But I want more hp for sure, eventually around 180-200hp. This project doesn't all have to be completed right now, if i can do one power gain project followed by another every couple of months thats fine.

Calvin,

#1- I know that E-1 that gets or has a 7 wants to start modifying it in one way or another.

#2- I don't know how long you have had this car and what you have done to it. However before you start adding HP there a lot more important things to add to the vehicle or make sure is in good working condition.

Read the thread in the archives about What to look for on a Rx-7 when buying or just bought.

Then read the thread in the archives about how to make more hP out of a 12a.

Also for god sakes don't ask how to turbo a 12a or 13b because it has been asking way too much!

As far a "Somewhat" decent fuel mileage? Not a chance when you Turbo. your foot is going to be in most of the time! :-)

Want to add HP and keep good fuel economy then Get a S4 or S5 N/A and put in the ECU and everything else that goes with it. Then just add a header/exhaust system. With a S4 you should be around the 165 HP mark and with the S5 you should be around the 180 HP mark.

What condition is the interior and body? What about the condition of everything else on the car? Steering and suspension?

Be original and spend the money and get the interior and exterior done and have all the mechanical parts in excellent working order. Then you can decide later whether you want to modify the engine!

Yeah I read that thread a couple of days ago.

I've had it for almost 2 years and in almost perfect condition, exterior is good, interior is good, has 35,000 original miles on it. When I bought it everything was original except for the RB exhaust. My original fuel pump just went out a month ago so I jus put an OEM low pressure pump on it not knowing if I was going to go efi.

Like I said, I'm unsure between blowthru or TII so I hadn't added a Weber carb.

Thanks a lot

If the car has 35k Original miles (verified) then the interior should be mint and the outside should be very very clean.

Post up some pictures of the inside and outside of the car and engine bay.

Personally I would leave it stock if it is original and that low of miles.

Then find another 7 to do your "Performance" mods to.

TII swap - it is well documented and pretty straight forward and reliable.

Yeah unfortunately it was hit around xmas and I had to do some cosmetics to it, like a new paint job and some fenders. But the drivetrain and all that is mint. I have some exterior pics of it on my profile, but I will definately upload some interiors for you guys.

Turbophilia; a contagious and debilitating disease brought on by watching too many movies with multiple "F's" in the title. Can lead to empty wallets, excessive walking, and social stigma.
