You need to go back to sex ed. class cause thats a female connector LOL.
It may be an unused one for your vehicle. Only way to know it to look a the color codes on the
wire and match it up with the connectors in the wiring diagram and see what is for. There are
a couple of connectors in that area that are just for MT and/or AT for instance. Same goes for
cruise control. Would need to know the year of the car as well to get the right diagrams.
They are all online at Foxed.ca .

edit - Nevermind, looking at the pics, you have flat strut towers, so it isn't a series 3.
Either way, Mazda would make ONE wiring harness for all models, so there will be connectors that sit there dangling because they are unused. Unless maybe you bought a GSL-SE with power steering and an automatic, that might use everything...

look at the connectors inside to refer to the sex I guess and that one I think has female
1/4" sockets.
Anyway, its probably extra and not that critical if its still running ok.

Male connectors have female pins and vice-versa.
Not only is this more stable, but female connectors are generally part of a component, and it is far easier to just have a flat blade of metal on a component, for both manufacture and assembly reasons.
The only time this really isn't the case is injector connectors... which all evolved from the original D-jet's connectors, where the wiring harness side WAS male with female pins. The design morphed after a while to stick a hood over the wiring harness side, to fit over the OUTside of the injector, sort of.
