my tranny wont let me shift **please help**
well heres the problem, I just put the motor in the car and the tranny wont let me go in gear when the engine is running but when the car is off, the tranny shifts great. tried bleading the slave but still no luck, oh yea i put the clutch on correctly cause i checked by turning the crank and saw that the end of the tranny was spinning, any idea's guys !
Well, for some reason it sounds like the clutch is not releasing. Verifying that the tailshaft moved with the engine does not prove that the clutch is capable of releasing, so there is no guarantee that your clutch was installed correctly...
the throw out bearing was good i checked it. but my question is how would the clutch go in incorrectly? i put the motor and tranny together while it was out of the car. it bolted in correctly with out any problems. it sucks i just put my motor in after 2 years of sitting and i cant even drive the dam thing. its a s5 t2 motor and tranny
They're talking about the clutch disc that gets sandwiched in by the clutch pressure plate. The flat side of the disc goes toward the flywheel. And make sure the pressure plate alignment bolts are...well...aligned.

I know on my clutch if you put it in backwards the springs would hit the flywheel and I seriously doubt I could even bolt on the pressure plate with it like that. If the pedal feels good and the hydraulics are working right, then the clutch rod on the pedal is probably out of adjustment and not pushing in enough on the master cyl.
Same thing happened to my 84 gsl-se I was driving around Drove up to my garage turned her off got back in turned her on lil bitch wouldnt go into gear so im thinkn i broke the tranny (just bought the car 6 months ago who said tranny rebuilt in 03) turn the car off and just like the guy who posted the tranny went into gear so i started it up in 1st let out the clutch and she was alive again.. pretty scared by it i left her in the garage till one day i found the paper work from car showing a rebuild for damn near 700 so i went out and beat on her some more shifts just fine............I took motor and tranny out tranny out everything looked good except for the rust inside at the tranny gears but didnt have much clutch wear looked rebuilt...Should i rebuild it again? keeping it pretty much stock with exhaust...
i just bled the slave some more and im still having the same problem damn i dont want to take the tranny down- oh yea will a pilot bearing really cause the tranny not to shift i thought the throw -out bearing did that. i wonder if i start the car in gear and try to drive it will it help the tranny shift??
You can try if you want to tear **** up. Swallow hard and drop the tranny. Btw, unless there is an internal problem, trannys shift with the engine off.
If the clutch fork is moving, put the car in 1st gear, clutch in and see if it can be easily pushed, bet not.
