This will tell you if something changed mid-year and give you the VIN of when the change was made.

I guess if you have a rear end that is unknown, the only way to tell between 83 and 84/85 is to measure the axles or bearings. There may also be additional markings on the housing for the rearend. The part numbers are different for 81-83 vs. 84-85.
I looked through both the 81-83 and 84-85 parts fiches and didn't see about axles relating to VIN #'s. Am I missing it, or is it just a myth that some 83's actually had the big rear axles?

Since there is nothing asking for VIN it proves that there are no 83's with big axles, they all have the small axles, but big driveshaft flange.
