82transam is correct. The '83 has the same flange/driveshaft as 84/85 (through bolts w/ nuts), but has the small axle (same as 81/82). Best way to tell differences is to look at the parts fiche:
81-83:

This will tell you if something changed mid-year and give you the VIN of when the change was made.
I guess if you have a rear end that is unknown, the only way to tell between 83 and 84/85 is to measure the axles or bearings. There may also be additional markings on the housing for the rearend. The part numbers are different for 81-83 vs. 84-85.
