You don't HAVE to, but the TII transmission will hold the power much better than a FB tranny. It's worth doing just to avoid having problems down the road. And please for the love of the rotary god read what you type before you click submit

If you are going to do that, trade me rotors and manifolds. Better yet, have it shipped to my house, and I'll sell you my 12A

Ive never given up on, ive done stuff here and there, but not in the full swing of things.

Heres the bottom line,

No job = No money to finish

With job= No time to finish

Its a double ended sword!

Yea I hear that, both situations suck, but having no job sucks cause then you have all this time with no parts, and you end up halfassing things to "get it going" So i'll take the latter....
BTW why are you looking for specifically a 83 rear end? They still have the small axles, the 84/85 rears bolt up to 83 driveshafts and you also get the bigger axles....

Yeah, and I can be kind of half-a**'n things

Really I thought I read some where that the 83 was in the shady gray area about the axle sizes, and the drvieshaft flange. I just bought I new driveshaft not that long ago, so I dont want to have to get a new one.

Ill do some more research on that, thanks for the info. Good to know

83 is definatly the mutt year in many ways. I've rear rumors that the later 83's had the larger axles of the 84/85, but one of my 83's is a April of 83 production date (definatly late for a 83 model year) and I'm almost positive it still had the small axles. All 83 and up have the large driveshaft flange....
Anyway, the bottom line is if you have the large driveshaft flange you're better off to get the 84/85 rear, bigger axles = stronger for t2 power

Sean, now you've got me confused! My 83 GS is an April build date. It has the large driveshaft flange (no threaded holes) so doesn't that mean that is HAS to have the large axles too? I was under the impression that large flange meant large axles. Am I wrong here?

I thought it was Small Flange = Large Axles & Large Flange = Small Axles

I always read the 79-82 were small axles and the changed mid way through the year on the 83's and the 84-85 are Large

But I may be mistaken, it was awhile ago that I remember reading that

83 is the "mutt" year it has the big driveshaft flange yet still has the small axles of the 79-82 cars.
I agree, 83's are the confusing year, shrouded in mystery (haha ok maybe not) but I'm going to check when I get home tonight, i still have both drum rears out of my 83's to put this to rest.

I always thought that if you looked at the bolt holes on the driveshaft flange then that would tell you. If the holes are threaded then you've got small axles. If the holes are not threaded then you got large axles. Am I wrong here??

I have the '83 and the holes are not threaded so I do not know what I have. I always thought it was the small one. I have always bought the standard '83 barings and the work.

Man why does mazda have to go and make things so tricky!

There has to be a sure fire way to tell with out having to tear into the rearend.

82transam is correct. The '83 has the same flange/driveshaft as 84/85 (through bolts w/ nuts), but has the small axle (same as 81/82). Best way to tell differences is to look at the parts fiche:

81-83:
http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/file...manuals/81-83/

84-85:
http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/file...manuals/84-85/

This will tell you if something changed mid-year and give you the VIN of when the change was made.

I guess if you have a rear end that is unknown, the only way to tell between 83 and 84/85 is to measure the axles or bearings. There may also be additional markings on the housing for the rearend. The part numbers are different for 81-83 vs. 84-85.
