My TII into FB Swap Thread!

I am making a thread to log all the updates on my swap. While I was getting ready for my swap. I read up on all the information I could on the swap. I figured I was finally ready to take on this project. My goal is to log my whole swap and people can read and use what I have learned from my swap, and use it towards thiers.

Well I started off buying a 1984 GSL-SE with a blown oil seal about a year ago with the goal in mind of making it a TII powered FB. I only paid 350 for it, and will be selling some of the engine parts to help fund my install.

Well it took a bit to save up money, going to school and working a part time job doesnt = Mass cash inflow. Well I saved up about 2000, and will see if I can make it work.

So then the search for a good engine began, My first plan was to buy a blown TII, then rebuild it, and start from there. I decided against this idea for my plan. I instead went with a J-Spec S4 TII. I had a little bit of worry about going this route, due to that fact that it is a used rotary, and its a gamble.

I found a TII longblock for sale local from www.revvinsevens.com, Curtis was a great guy, answered all my questions, I had a lot too lol. I ended up going ahead and buying the engine, becuase it came with a 6 month, 6K warranty. That to me is worth alot, knowing that if it does fail im not stuck like chuck with a blown engine.

I picked up the engine yesterday, and we tested it there at the shop, and it read 100Psi on both rotors. I got a chance to see a 91 Cosmo 20b, which was well worth the drive up to Arlington!

I got the enigne home and unloaded it and in the process of stripping it down and cleaning it up a lil bit.

I still need to clean up my shop from my last project, and get the car inside.

Cool dude! I just got my S5 13bt in my 83 project and am in the middle of all the wiring (using stock ECU) and plumbing. I've done lots of reasearch as well and having just installed the engine its all fresh in my mind, so I might be of some help if you need it
Good luck!

Looks like that engine had a colorful past.....

See the extra fuel injectors in the intercooler outlet, near the throttle body?
And its got a oilfilter adaptor for pressure/temp.
Cooling system looks a little scary, but if the compression was good and he waranteed it,you should be OK.
Could have been a rebuild,or a build-up since it appears to have S5 rotorhousings.....the knock sensor is usually in the center iron on S4's.

I know its a weird request, but could you keep track of any spending beyond the 2K, nuts bolts, extra coolant, whatever?

I'm going to be doing a basic 12a turbo soon and am going to keep exact costs on mine, so then maybe people can compare the costs and results between the two.

Thanks 82transam, I will for sure be taking you up on the offer. lol

Steve, Yes I did notice those injectors, and the aftermarket oil adaptor. I didnt however notice the knock sensor, I am new to FC engines.

I did notice the extra injectors in the intercooler, I was like WTF are those doing in there. Curtis told me that is like a big thing that they do over in Japan. I am interested in this, I want to find out more about them. I want to believe that the engine has had a well taken care of past, and thats what I will continue to believe. lol

RenoFB, that is not a wierd request, its one that infact I am already doing. I have reciepts for everything I have bought so far, and I will continue to do this. Down to the nuts and bolts. I have set up an account with the local hardware store, so I can keep track of my spending.

I still need to finish getting that last of the parts. I still lack an oil pan, front cover, and a TII harness.

I can't wait to see this all go down. Looks like a nice build you've got lined up. I'm going to keep track of this to note any changes you do to the rest of the car aside from the motor as I may be upping my stock GSL-SE I'm getting this Saturday to a TII in the distant future.

LOL! yea that's hardly a stock engine. who knows what that went through. As i've said before the japanese engines ar mearly garenteed rebuildable cores. it's great when you find thins like 3 puck ceramic clutches. or like my last one an aftermarket ecu.

Matt, those extra injectors are from running the old style HKS FCON II, or III most guys would then use a greddy rebic III additional injector controller to control 2, or 4 stock injectors that came on line with the boost. the japanese did not start useing bigt injectors until recently (last 7 years or so) and still use nothing larger than a 1200 cc (SARD)

Awesome, thats crazy, yet cool at the same time. Thanks for that info Kenn

Chris, the SE came with the engine out already and the oil pan and front cover where not in the parts box. I just assumed they were on the bottom, but we all know what happens when you assume! lol

84RX_Se7en. I will keep you updated on status of my install on the interior. I have a few I ideas I think might look really good.

Thanks to the mods for getting rid of all the extra posts from Hyper

I am still getting the feeling back in my fingertips, I just got done working on my buddys rock crawler truck, and Im used to the heat I down here, I dont know how you guys up in the north live with the cold!

You get used to the cold, I was out there in sub freezing temps last week replacing all the very old and very cracked vaccum lines on my 13bt.
I wonder if there are any stock JDM engines left out there? Seems like all the JDM 13bt's have at least a few mods done to them. Mine has a knighsports hybrid turbo, gauge senders on the oil filter pedastal, a mazdaspeed 3 puck clutch (completely wasted), and the sender for a EGT gauge.....
I might have missed this in your earlier post, but you are planning on running a stock ECU and a turbo trans right?

I dont know about the turbo yet, as I havent taken off the heat shields, the clutch looks stock, but I got an oil pedastal and an EGT sensor on mine too.

I plan on running the Stock turbo, with a Rtek 1.7 modded ECU, which will allow me to run 720's in the secondarys, plus it has other good benifts too.

No, I plan on running the Jspec engine. Then down the road I will see what happens. I want to learn to drive a turbo FB first.

Chris.
Becuase the car did not come with the front cover and oil pan. I was young at the time, and got excited as it was the first car I had bought with my own money. I forget to check to make sure all the parts where in the boxes. Guess which ones were not in there. I saw them later for sale on the fourm, but I just wrote it off, I know karma will get him in the end! lol

I have increased my budget to 2.5k, after buying parts all week I found myself coming up on the end of the budget real quick. lol

I found out, that I have a hodge podge for an engine. It seems to be a S5 block and turbo, with a Mech OMP, and other s4 series parts, but it works out good in the end as I get a better engine out of the deal, and I can still use everything I already got for the swap.

I should hopefully get to the teardown and clean process this weekend, I have been busy installing a shower, which has turned out to be a nightmare, but thats not important.

I have also found that the FC section of this forum, stinks to high heavens I cant get a single thing awnsered in there, but the "How do I do a burnout" thread has 5 pages!! UGH

Until next time.....

Matt

Update: 2/8

Well, the parts have started to come in, and the budget has gone out the window. I had planned on trying to do this swap for under 2k, but that just isnt going to happen.

I got the T2 driveshaft already modified to fit (thanks to luiml73)
Rtek 1.7 ECU
720cc low Imp injectors
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Front cover, oil pan, new gasket
AFM, Boost sensor, Emissions block off kit.

I still havent gotten a chance to go and clean that motor. I still have to clean my shop, from the last project I did.
