My speedometer stopped working
overnight on my '85 GSL. I was looking under the dash for any big sign with an arrow that would say "over here! here's the problem!" pointing to a loose connection that would make it easy to fix the problem. No luck though. Any suggestions on what/where to check or is it a waste of time and should I just not bother? One interesting thing I found when looking under the dash, it's that there seemed to be oil in some cables, leaking from the speedometer?

that's exactly what hapenned. I was driving this afternoon and by good luck I was cruising at ralenti for a moment and had my stereo off, so the noise level was relatively low and so heard a funny noise under the car. Pulled up to a parking lot, and lo and behold, had been dragging the loose end for 24 hours! it was fortunately not damaged, so i screwed it back on and voila! speedometer working again. thanks.

4 possibilities here:
1) Speedometer cable broken (very likely)
2)Speedometer cable came loose from tranny, or not tight enough (very likely)
3)Speedometer defect (doubt it)
4)Transmission gears worn out (doubt it, but still possible)

I know I'm bringing this back from the dead, but since today is the first real day I got to drive my car around, I've found out that my speedo also doesn't work right. It will go up to about 20-25, but I was definitely going faster than that (probably around 45-50)
anyway, I'm wondering if anybody has a pic or can tell me specifically where on the tranny this cable can be found? in relation to where the slave cylinder is located maybe? thanks!
(I'm gonna check it tomorrow and don't really want to fart around too much looking for things)
thanks again!

crap. I'm assuming it's the thing that is directly behind the slave cylinder, and sure enough, the wire coming off of that has been crimped. Where do I get a new one and what is it called?

It's called a speedometer cable, but that's just the metal wire. You could get another one at the scrap yard for cheap, I have no idea how much it's worth brand new.

experts? please? I need to know three things.
1) where specifically is the speedo cable connected (pix would be nice)?
2) where do I get a new speedo cable if mine is broken aside from a junk yard?
3) does the odometer and trip meter also go off of this, because I have some long trips coming up and would like to know how far I've gone for navigational purposes?
thanks

1) The speedo cable is connected to the rear portion of the transmission (just in front of the driveline). It is on the driver's side. It is a large black cable connected to the transmission via a silver looking cylinder. To remove from the transmission end, unscrew the cylinder and pull out cable. The other end of the cable goes through the firewall and into the instrument cluster. To remove, you will have to reach up under the dash and follow the cable up to where it connects to the instrument cluster. Once you find it, there is a plastic connector the surrounds the cable that you will have to press down on and slide back in order to release the cable from the cluster. It takes a little work to get to it, but it can be done. It may help to remove the ducting in that area to help gain access.
2) The speedo cables are year dependent and auto/manual transmission dependent. You can get what you need from the dealer. Victoria British has speedo cables for 81'-83' models I believe.
3) Yes. The trip meter and odometer rely on the speedometer cable.
Hope this helps.
