My new Rx7 has problems.

I just bought an 82 Rx7 and it has a few things wrong with it.

When I'm taking a right turn it makes a noise in intervals. I don't think it sounds like grinding and I'm not sure where its coming from. I looked under my rearend and it was leaking. I read on the forums and it kinda sounds like a wheel bearing.

The car came with a spare rear end and new rotors and calipers and brand new 411 gears and a driveshaft.. WIll putting that in help that? And how hard would it be to replace it myself, verse getting it done at a shop.

I just tried to get it smogged and it failed something by 3 points. I just got some oil and a new filter and I'm about to change that. Is there anything else I can do to help ym car pass smog.

Also my overhead lights aren't working/

And my window switches where not working but I took them out and sanded the contacts and now they work like a champ!

For the smog test.....get some of that stuff at your local auto parts store and make sure the engine is hot

If you have done some mechanic work before and have a 1/2 drive set then the Rear is not a problem. If not then have someone else do it.

I had one that was poping and acting funny. the Watts link was twisted where it meets the axle.

The guy who sold me the car said, "the rubbing sound is normal, that is the limited slip rear end,, it has always done that, if you give it more gas going around right hand croners it will sqeak the tires a little but it will not make that sound"

Welcome to the forum. Read this and see if it help diagnose your problem. http://www.mazdatrix.com/g2.htm An LSD rear can chatter in extreme cornering but in normal driving it shouldnt. Possibly changing the rear gear oil and using an LSD additive (they sell them where the gear oil is) might stop it if thats the problem. The previous owner may not have used the additive.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, after rereading I see its only in right handers. Thats probably not a differential problem, but at least check the oil level anyway since it shows evidence of leakage. Sounds more like a wheel bearing. Front or rear.

Cant help much with smog, except to say that a full tuneup cant hurt. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil and filter change.

As far as the dome lights, check the online manuals for the wiring diagrams. Lnks are in the stickied threads at the top of the 1st gen forum.

I'm about to go to the guy's house I bought it from and pick up all the spare parts.

I got this 1982 RX7 GSL for $750. It has 260k on the body, 50k on an engine, and like 20k on a tranny.

I want to put the gears in the spare rear end adn install that.

Sympton

Vibration in drivetrain when starting off in first gear, and decreases once car is moving.

Problem

Front U-joint is bad.

I think that may be wrong too. When I'm taking off from first it feels like my rear end is shaking before it goes. Usually if i give it a little too much gas, I think.

That could be clutch chatter as well. It can seem like the rear end is shaking, but it's really the clutch gripping and slipping rapidly.

I think this may help diagnose the problem.

When I'm driving and I turn, it's a lot easier to turn to the left. It feels like there is some resistance when I turn right.
