My first RX-7 - 1982!
Hi ,
I just picked up my first RX7 (finally!) and was wondering if you could give
me any basic ideas of things to look out for - important maintenance tips -
anything essential I should know, because Ive never owned a rotary before.
After researching a bit I have found that I should never use synthetic oil -
probably 20w50 and to make sure the coolant is always fine cause heat = very
very bad.
Its a stock 12A, 5 speed and everything appears original - and it has
220,000 on the clock. Interior need ssome work but the body and engine
appear ok (not that i know what to look for - it just doesnt make any weird
sounds )
Im not sure what exact model it is (S model or whatever - how do I find
this?)
When would i be likely to be up for rebuild or replace? and how much does
this cost ?
Would it be fine to take on long trips? like 1000 miles upwards.
Any info you could give me would be really appreciated! Im really looking
forward to getting out in this one... I have ridden road bikes until now
(still do) and this car is the closest thing to a bike on the road with 4
wheels!
Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Geoff.

If its got 220 (miles or kilometers?) than I would recommend just take it easy on her and yep use 20w50 and make sure the cooling system is working good. Just maintain her well and she should last a while longer, as for when to expect a rebuild... I couldnt really say but you might wanna have some aside cause any car with 220k on the clock... kno what i mean? Price... probably around $1500 for a rebuilt engine give or take... If the car runs good and feels up for a roadtrip than why not... but if it seems a bit iffy I wouldnt..
As for telling which model it is.. If it had rear disc breaks its def a GSL if it doesnt its either a GS or an S, the GS and S were basicaly the same as both had the same available options I think and mechanicaly there is no difference really between any of them except for the rear disc breaks and LSD which only GSL's had...

Good Work!
Good to hear from yuh, Pardner...
I'm happy for yuh....We gotta an Aussie here in Ohio who's Big Time into Sevens...His handle is aussiesmg....You'll find him very knowledgeble, and generous as well. You can find him in the "members" section. Send 'em an e-mail, he'd love to hear from a fellow Aussie.
My only advice is to obtain some MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) and dump at least a half a quart in every oil change, also add a half quart to the fuel tank. My Seven buddies are gonna rib me on this, but they all will also agree with me...
My best to yuh...

my first 7 was also a 82. it was a gsl that was poorly taken of. it had rust holes everywhere, the carb was craped out, the ignition system was shot, tranny was bad, and allot more. it had 181,000 on it when i got it. after doing some work to it i got it it run perfect. then i started doing some mods to car. i had it for a while but i got hit by a drunk driver around 200,000 miles. i then bought a 85 rx-7 that was mint and only had 100,000 miles on it but i swaped the motor from the 82 cause i trusted it more. then the car got a header and a holley. after about another 10,000 miles i crashed the car into a huge rock that someone had nicely placed in the middle of the road one night. so i pulled the motor out again and sold the car to a friend. then i bought an absolutly beautiful 1980 rx-7 with mikuni side draft carbs, header, exhaust and more. but the car had a blown motor. so i put the 82 motor into that car with all the mods from the other engine. i took that car all the way to tennesse (i live in s.w. florida) with no problems what so ever. i had that car for about a year and would say that it probly had around 220,000 mi. on the motor when one day i was driving down the road and a guy decided to pull out into the street from behind a semi. needless to say again i lost another rx-7. i still to this day think that the motor would have still run if i pulled it out of the car. the only reason that i never tooik the motor from that car was because it was half way inside the car after the crash. oh yeah and by the way, that motor got taken to the street races every weekend and got the living crap kicked out of it, and still never had a problem with it.
