I got this car insured and started driving it yesterday. well, the timing somehow slipped and it was at 60 degrees from TDC when I checked it, (at idle) I fixed it now it runs alot better.

My dads did the same thing. When I would rev it it woud sound like it was knocking but the spark was just that far off. We had to move the distributor a whole tooth to get it straightened out.

Well i seem to be having a similar issue my buddy BoxMan on this forum or Dane if you know him hooked up the timing light to my brothers 82 GSL 12A hes got a holley intake and carb with mechanical secondaries, and a header back exhaust, I noticed that at high rpm (5K-8K) once in third with my foot down to the floor the car starts cutting in and out and looses power big time, also hwne the power band starts to come in just before 3,500Rpm the car gets really jerky like it wants to go! rast nest has been removed and car is pull proper vacum! now to the point hooked up the light and he looked at it and messed around for about an hour and a 1/2 and said well.....has anyone ever pull the dizzy out on this car and i said I'm not sure it's only got 70K original miles on it, and he said well your timings good know how far off so.....in the end Today I'm going to take it back to him and pull the dizzy out and get the car to top dead center and put the dizzy in the right way and time it! now how many Degrees advanced should i run over stock on the trailing and leading, any ideas will help thanks

considering my distributor doesnt even tighten to one spot I am sure mine is just as bad. My car also does that weird jerky junk in third gear, now I know what will hopefully fix that. I heard that you need an adjustable timing light, true?

Back a number of years ago when I lived in New Jersey my car was stolen. Among other things the entire ignition system was removed. It was recovered and spent about 6 months being fixed. When I finally got it back and drove home it was running like ****. Got out my timing light and found I could not adjust it enough to get it where it should be. Got out the manual and pulled the dizzy, found out the shop had put the new one in 180 degrees off!! I was surprised the car even ran (even more surprised it didn't do any damage).

I don't think you need an adjustable timing light, but I have one, so I use it anyways. When I was timing Nate's car last night, I couldn't even see the timing marks on the pulley, so I hit the leading mark with some green paint, thinking that I just couldn't see it (stock yellow and blue was worn off). So we re-start it and I use the timing on the light to look for the mark, setting the gun to 60 degrees advanced (retards the light 60 degrees) I could see the green mark under the waterpump pulley. So I'd say his timing is over 60 degrees off.
