I tried 2 diffrent ones, both sounded like crap and where way to loud, and offered no increase in power over my RB Primaflow.

I wish the RB looked a bit better, maybe weld on some better looking tips? If RB ever makes a full polished muffler like they do now for the 2nd gens, I'd buy one!!

The bigger the muffler, the better. Small mufflers are too restrictive for the amount of sound they remove. (Quiet and small = no power, powerful and small = no quiet)

Tip size also plays a role. Big single tips will sound like crap. Two smaller tips will provide enough flow without sounding like a bass bagpipe.

Notice the stock mufflers, and the RB mufflers, are large in size and have two fairly small (compared to the import crap on the market) tips and they sound fairly nice.

I tried a mini-turbo muffler with a 2.5" single exit... it was incredibly loud, it sounded even worse than a fart-cannon (if that's possible), but on the plus side it only lasted a day before it blew its seam wide open. Of course, that happened when I was 70 miles from home, near midnight... grr. Consider that a worst-case scenario.

Right now I have a stainless steel muffler I grabbed from an OE application (read: dumpster-dived a mint Lincoln muffler) and it is really quiet and flows surprisingly well. It's fairly large, has a single 1 7/8" tip so it doesn't have a nasty fart tone, and flowed enough for a 15.8 pass. Plus I can talk to a passenger at 70mph!

Take a look at it in my other post called PICTURES its the only pic you don't have to download.

I have a Tsudo dragger style muffler with a 4 inch tip. I think it sounds great but its really loud. I think that has a lot to do with the header and no cats though. At least it doesn't sound like a little piece of medal vibrating, like a honda does. Mines nice and throaty. And as for what looks best I think the one big tip looks best on first gens because our bumpers don't come low enough to put a dtm two style muffler. Just my 2 cents anyway.

rx7 nut and others can you post pics? For the second gen i like the Apexi N1, huge *** mufflers that could shelter a homeless person, now if that was only available for a first gen.

I like the look of the OEM muffler on my -SE, the nice dual tip looks real nice if you ask me. I like the look of the Mindtrain dual throat muffler also.

I just wish I could find a Mindtrain muffler online.

Lightbulb mufflers that look good on 1st gens

I've got a 50-series flowmaster on my '83 gsl-se limited, it kicks a@#. It looks pretty decent, with a 4in. resonated tip welded on the outlet, and you don't have bad interior resonance (dependent on throttle position). i got my exhaust man to chop at the reactor, and run a cat-free 2.5in. pipe all the way to the Flow (loose emissions laws in NC).I'll try and build a .wav to post.

yea i love the look of the single and dual N1's but on all the 7's i see them on THEY ARE LOUD. but then again that could be the t04's and t78's making all the noise. I would like to see 1 on a 1st gen

Nah.... Turbos are rather efficient muffling devices. They thrive on sound energy... sound energy is pressure and it's pressure (both from blowdown force and thermal expansion) that drives the turbine. Once that energy is spent driving the turbine there's not much left to assault the ears.

I drove my old Impulse with the downpipe disconnected - nothing after the turbo except the elbow the downpipe bolted to. The noise level was quite acceptable. (That car had terminal overheat problems and leaving the DP off made it easier to pull the head. )

whatever you do, do NOT get pacesetter/monza. they're inexpensive and look decent, but perform a little crappy. maybe a little better than stock, but not worth it when you look at pretty much every other brand. its also loud and sounds metallic as all get-out. the muffler itself is about half the height of the stocker, but the same length. perhaps all you need to quiet it down some is a presilencer.... a stainless steel wool filled glass pack, only there's no 'glass. rb sells them. i got one for like $60, just haven't had a chance to put it on. i'm willing to bet that makes a big difference in the exhaust note.

I love my Power Pulse from Mazda Trix. It sounds a little louder than stock. I have tried a flow master with a 4 inch tip and it sounded so horibly loud that I had to go out and buy the Power Pulse soon as I could. I will never do that to my car again.

Replaced the exhaust system on my GSL-SE two years ago with Racing Beat Street Performance converter (replaces all 3 cats and had fitting for air line to ports 5/6) and what they now call the Power Pulse muffer. It was a straight forward "swap-out" with minimul tweaking required. Great sound in the 4-8K rpm range and I like the "stock look of the muffler." Have been quite satified with this set-up.

Bought the car with the current exhaust system. It has header, 2 presilencers in series to a "Y", and out what seems to be 2 single Apexi N1's held together with a homemade bracket. Its a little loud but not that bad. At least the neighbors havent complained yet. 2 people can talk, if they talk a tad louder than usual. Just ordered the muffler silencers to see if it cuts the noise down.

fitting for air line to ports 5/6
Does this mean that a factory setup has a return line from the exhaust to open the 5/6 ports?? I dont have that.

Unhappy

Treceb,
I miss-spoke in last reply. The air pipe supplies fresh air from the air pump to the converter at low rpm to reduce the level of hydro-carbons ect... to acceptable levels for emmissions purposes.

yep on 6 port motors there is a line that goes from the exh to the 5/6(6ports)ports and opens them up at "x" rpm/pressure.
If you could I WOULD LOVE a pic of the exh. on your car...just the rear section like the *** of the car and under the back end of the muffler piping... if you had a way of getting a wav that would kick *** also.

i had the racing beat header and muffler installed on my '85 SE a few years ago, along with two custom made pre-silencers, it sounded incredible! a very mellow sound at idle and great at WOT. the random tech. cat i had to add when they started emmison testing her kinda messed that sound up a bit but still nothing like those honduh's with the resonator tips or whatever they hell they use these days!
