Muffler help

I'm going for a new muffler on my FB. I've looked at the aftermarket alternatives, I've personally heard that the Pacesetter one sounds bad and then the RB one is too expensive. What I've mainly been looking at is going with a universal muffler and having an exhaust shop making a 2" pipe over the axle. This seems like it would be the cheapest way.

What type of muffler should I be looking at? How come I never hear of chambered mufflers being used on rotaries? It usually seems like most people go with a glasspack/silencer type that involves a straight tube going thru a packed area. I've heard good things about the Magnaflows and Borlas but I'm worried that something like those might be too loud. Is there any reason I couldn't go for a cheap three chambered muffler? Also, considering the muffler is all the way on the back of the car I shouldn't have to worry about heat right?

In general, chambered mufflers suck big ones, IMO. They cause way too much restriction for the amount of muffling they do. I switched from the stock chambered muffler to two old, high-mileage glasspacks and it got quieter and more powerful, not to mention much, much better-sounding. (Generally speaking, don't use glasspacks either, as they wear out too fast on rotaries; I don't know what Rotary Engineering did to theirs to make them last so well, but unfortunately they are NLA)

It also depends a lot on which chambered muffler you're referring to. Racing Beat makes decent, quiet ones, but they are very expensive (you can get three Borlas or four Magnaflows for the price of one RB main muffler). If you go with a cheap chambered muffler, I guarantee you will hate how it sounds (unless you like your car to sound like garbage, I guess).

Anybody have any comments on the Pacesetter Monza units? They are looking real appealing to me. Anybody using any of there products? I haven't seen their headers used much and they look like a good product.

Pacesetter headers arn't worth anything. Not sure about the mufflers. I heard one once and it sounded good.

Pacesetter sucks. The full system is loud and tinny, and from what I hear, doesn't flow so well. Just looking at it, I can see why. Poor header design and louvered-core mufflers.

RB sells separate mufflers and presilencers for personal exhaust fabrication. Aside from that, the Borla X1R mufflers are great.....but I prefer the RB ones. The RB are also about the same price, if not cheaper. They have the Universal 3" inlet/outlet presilencers in 2 sizes--medium and large ($99 or $105). They also sell a universal muffler in either 2.5" or 3" inlet/outlet ($108 or $118).
You want a muffler that contains steel mesh packing, not fiberglass. Rotaries run wayy too hot for fiberglass packing and will fall apart in no time. (1st hand experience too).

You can find them at the bottom of the bar on the left---click on exhaust components and then scroll almost all the way down.

it doesnt pay...

to cheap out on exhaust components. due to the extreme heat of rotary exhaust, follow the racing beat guidelines. they aren't the experts for nothing. rotary exhaust gas pulses are high velocity and that is why baffled mufflers sound horrible on them. its like banging on a metal headed drum really fast (with no packing), that's why straight through mufflers sound better. and of course, you get what you pay for...

^ Do you have a sound clip of that setup? I'd love to hear it.

I only have direct experience with their presilencers and chambered mufflers, but I hear their universal mufflers are good, too. They aren't nearly as expensive as their chambered ones, only a little more than a Borla ProXS. I'll be using one in my turbo exhaust system, with a Borla ProXS in the main muffler location.

There are others that can be found by searching with the term exhaust but the 2nd one is kind of the mega of threads on the subject.

Take a look in the for sale section here on the forums for people selling there's cheap. Usually they sell between $75 and $150 depending on the condition(which is usually still good cause RB's **** is built serious)
