No way it added 200 HP to his mustang. It will however do like Jeezus said and help with starting and may SLIGHTLY increase mileage.

I got some fuel line magnets, hydrogen-injection electrolysis cans, and and intake flow turbulators that I'd let you have for less than that. Guaranteed 100%* increase in HP every time you start the car.

There's a recent thread about "Performance" HEI ignitors and so on that asks a lot of the questions that really need to be answered prior to really "figuring out" if something like a MSD control box will add anything more... In a word, no, it's not really worth it.

The displacement of the engine should have no bearing on its use. Just wire it up as a 13B and all should be good. Coils are coils - just follow the directions and remember you will need 2.

As far as adding HP, it doesn't "ADD" HP, it merely makes better use of the Hp potential the car has....meaning it will add some hp, but thats a factor of how deficient your old ignition system was - following me?

I noticed a substantial gain in top end performance as well as smoother idle and a touch of better fuel economy. Distributer caps and rotors go quick; btw!

The price on the boxes are high, so the return on investment is questionable, but I will always have CD boxs on my cars. Consider it a nice luxury item to have on your car if its driven on the street. Boost, NOS, etc. then it becomes almost mandatory if you intend to squeeze every pony out of the car.

Good luck, and the guy stating 200hp gains is probably including the turbo gains that went with it. You can expect 2-7 hp improvement over existing based on application (notice I didn't say HP gain). Mine gains were very noticable immediatly after install.......using the scientific butt-dyno.

Why ditch the trailing ignition? Just to have the clean distributor cap?

I was under the impressor the Leading plugs fire at different times? That the rotors are phased offset.

Still trying to learn how the firing system works. I'd like to upgrade as soon as I relay my ignition switch.

Not sure how I want to do it yet. I have spare j-109 ignitors, and an msd 6al, and an extra blaster 2 coil. Researching routes!

i converted my SA to electronic on trailing and installed a 6al in the leading. i'm running two msd blaster coils wired parallel and the dist is providing spark on the trailing via an accell coil. i never had it dynoed before or after the install but i can say that it def made a difference. much more responsive and quicker revs, and starts much easier starting especially during the cold months. but you have to consider that i went from the stock points ignition to the msd setup. also im running a sidedraft weber dcoe45 with no choke and before i switched to the msd and converted to electronic ignition i always had to use starting fluid (ether) to get it running when cold, but after the msd it always started up right away. im sure it at least added 3-5 more HP, though it didn't seem to be much faster or more powerful, it did seem way more lively and started up much better, as well as the back fire that it always had seemed to be much less pronounced which i assume was due to the msd providing more complete combustion. i would def recommend it.

I don't come here very often anymore, but from a racers perspective the MSD does virtually nothing. We have had guys dyno before and after. We drive our cars between 6000-10000 rpm pretty much all the time. The stock 12A ignition in good condition is more reliable and works just as well, IMHO.
Now, idle, driveability, and economy that is where the MSD should give you some improvement.
