mounting s4 TII tranny in first gen
OK i have searched, and i have found sonme conflicting information on this site. Some people say that (as far as bolting it to the chassis) The S4TII tranny will bolt up with no midiofactions at all (execpt for the flywheel swap, and shifter)
As much as Id like to believe this i really cant. Can you guys show me a picture of how you mounted the TII tranny in your first gen?

This link is to an Aussie RX7 fan's home page where he documents (blow by blow with pictures) the fitting of a Gen 2 turbo engine and gearbox into a Gen 1.
He makes reference to S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5 models which stands for Series 1 .. Series 5 which is how the Australian models where specified. Basically the S1 to S3 are the 3 models that the US call Gen 1 and the S4 and S5 are the 2 models the US call Gen 2.

Hope this helps.

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
well it didnt bolt right in on my car, i had to make a tranny mount, and cut the shifter hole back 3"..... then came the custom driveshaft.... i opted to use my existing clutch// flywheel setup so i used a rx4 bellhousing, bolted to the urbo 2 tranny with a custom clutch disk... worked great

As far as the crossmember goes I tossed the rubber mount in the trash and made a plate that's 3/4" that goes inbetween the trans and the crossmember. Doing this places the trans at the correct height in the rear. The crossmember does have to be redrilled because the T2 trans bolt holes are farther apart.

ok, so with the adapter, whats the point of the circled parts? If you elimated them the tranny would be at the same hight.
Wait cant get the picture to post.
Its the metal parts in blakes picture he has two for the cross member bolts and one under the tranny. If you elimated them the tranny would be at the same hight. WHy are they there?

Using the stock 1st gen rubber mount and crossmember,I just put some 1" spacers between the body and the x-member,like Blake. Angles are perfect and it required minimal work.
The shifter isnt hard to position correctly. You have to remove the tailcone and selector shaft. Then cut 1" off the shaft and redrill the roll pin hole.It actually drills out pretty easy,I expected it to be hard as hell. Then cut 1" off the selector shaft tube and rejoin the ends with a piece of rubber hose.Reinstall the tailcone and selector shaft with a 1st gen shifter box.The shifter will now be 1" foreward, but still shift like a stock TII tranny.
The driveline can be a stretched TII unit or a custom made unit,or a hybrid using the stock 1st gen shaft(not recommended since the small U-joints wont like the torque)
Heres some pics of my shifter, trans, driveline and machined TII rearend yoke.

Not sure either.I didnt use a spacer under the tranny itself, just the X-member.
He might have a different rubber mount than me.The 2 rubber mount bolts fit the TII tranny, but I did have to shave a bit of rubber and metal off the mount to get the bolts into the tailcone.

Thats what I suspected. It looked like the bolts were spaced too far out to be threaded directly into the tranny.
I worked the FB rubber mount over with a grinder until I could get the bolts directly into the tranny.Simpler in the end,but nasty to grind rubber.
No, the syncros are in the gearbox on the main/counter shafts.Removing the tailcone and shifter box up top, requires no special tools or measuring. If your apprehensive to dig into the tranny, dont worry. Its a simple remove, modify and replace proceedure. All you need is a drill, measuring tape and a hacksaw/grinding wheel to relocate the shifter box to the FB position.
