Motor mounts

How does one know when one's motor mounts (and transmission mount) want replacement?

Put the car in first and lay on the brakes... Slowly ease off the clutch. If the engine lunges up that side is bad. Do the same in reverse and see if the engine lunges up.

You can also, pry on them with a pry bar, but if the car isn't on a lift this is pretty difficult.

Also, look for shifter movement on hard launches.

EDIT: I suppose you could jack the engine up and see if they separate. BUT watching the engine move is soooo much fun.

Forgot to mention that I have the engine out of the car and the motor mounts in my hot little hands. How can I tell visually if they have perished?

The motor mounts are under $10 each + shipping. Might as well just change them.

1985 MAZDA RX-7 1.1L R2 Motor Mount | RockAuto

The trans mount is aslo under $10 + shipping.
