Motor damaged in shipping, got a couple questions.
I bought a motor and had it shipped from FL to PA. It looked like this when they were getting ready to go on the truck...
But this is what I came home to in my driveway today...
So two of the water pump bolts are snapped off and the timing pin is bent down against the pulley. I can also see the pass side flywheel inspection cover is bent into a taco shell. Tomorrow my bro-in-law is lending me his hoist so I can inspect it better. Right now it's still strapped to the pallet.
Mega bummer.
So I assume I'll be able to find the long wp studs but I'm a little worried about fixing the timing pointer. Will it bend back with pliers, or might it snap? Can I pull it out and put a new one in?
Engine was built by Rotary Performance in Margate FL but was shipped to me from Pettit Racing. Apparently Pettit is very bad at packing motors, and the trucking company has a hard time not destroying things. Double whammy.
Seller isn't being very helpful. Said he can send me some wp studs. Ah, the rotary life.
Bend it back carefully. It is just mild steel. Find a very small socket or anything else with a tiny hole that has a handle to provide leverage. This gives you more control. You will easily bend the pointer back to straight with great confidence!
Did you complain about it to them? Is there any way to return it so why don't you return it? around 4 months ago ordered an AC motor for my truck which we use for 24/7 towing service, but that parcel we received in a damaged package so-called them to return that.
Before much more time goes by, look closely at front pulleys for witness marks.
Put some bolts into e shaft on back of engine and use a long screwdriver to turn thru a couple revolutions while eyeballing pulley/pin relationship. Runout seen by eye should bear a closer look.
Can’t help wondering how timing pin got bent so severely with no apparent damage to anything else in the vicinity.
Thanks for the replies guys. R&L Carriers was the trucking company. I don't know WHAT they did, but they put it on the seller and me to prove the value of damages, requiring me to take it to a certified mechanic familiar with the motor and have him write a parts and labor estimate for all damages, mailed to them within 5 days.
Yeah right. I have a mechanic I trust for inspections, but I know more about sourcing rotary parts than he does. The seller wants to make it right and has sent me new WP studs and the flywheel inspection plate. I got off work early today and I'm heading home to hoist it up and inspect it thoroughly.
I'm going to unbolt the pulley and straighten the timing needle, then put it back on and make sure everything spins smooth and true. Also inspect the pan and flywheel. Seller said to take motor to a machine shop and he would pay for the wp stud holes to be cleaned up and replaced.
Note- I didnt buy this motor from Pettit. I bought it from a forum member, who does business with Pettit and had them ship the motor. Pettit packed the motor completely half-assed and then gave it to a crumbly transport company who mishandled it. But if Pettit had properly crated it I think it would have fared better on its journey. They used a light weight Walmart ratchet strap to strap it to the pallet, which didnt hold it securely, and no structure over top except an unpadded cardboard box. I think the carrier set another box/crate on top of it which crushed it. But there are damages to front and back of motor, so.... I don't know what they did.
The Rotary Gods are mad that I didnt rebuild and port my OE 12A.
I have several buddies that have done business with Pettit, they do great work and stand by their stuff normally. I bet the seller low balled Pettit on shipping it for them and this is the results. I would even bet the seller was advised of the cost to ship it "right" and probably didn't like the cost, so Pettit offered a cheaper package. Loved to hear the Pettit side of this one.
