Monza exhaust

I am looking into a new exhaust system and I was wondering how the monza headers and the rest of the kit like the muffler are? How do they sound and are they emmissions legal? Thanks

Nobody likes Monza PaceMaker headers based on posts here. They are low quality. The coating peels off and it turns blue and rusts within a weeks worth of driving.

Monza Mufflers are also craptacular in that they rust out..

Look for MindTrain and Racing Beat for high quality ****.

Again. I have not used any of these products, but from being on here as long as I have, I think it's summed up pretty well.

I've got the RB single-presilencer system, it's fantastic. It provides a very significant power boost, and sounds great - deep tone and much quieter than other systems. Racing Beat is expensive stuff, but consensus is that it's the best.

The only problem with the RacingBeat system is it's not emissions legal

Too bad for me.

I'll be getting the Mazdatrix setup with a header and cat.

I bought a Monza muffler about a year ago from Victoria British. I thought the yellow tip looked pretty cool, and they did when it arrived. Within the 1st hour or two of driving, the little stickers on the outsid burned off, and all the yellow paint on the tip was charred and looked black. Ok, not too bad...

Now, a year later the thing is already rusting around the weld joints and looks like crap. I have already bought a new muffler from rx7.com, but not installed... (very lazy) Get the good stuff. Just my opinion.

ummm.... i thought the mazdatrix setup WAS a racing beat system. just like the mazdatrix springs, and strut tower bar, amongst other things...

I know they have the same header, but the Mazdatrix system has a cat, and the RacingBeat system has a pre-silencer.

I ned a cat to pass emissions up here, so I'm getting mine from Mazdatrix.

Hey smnc, sucks to have a later model FB I guess... mine's an 82, registered in Ottawa. They start e-testing next year, but luckily it will be exempt (over 20 years old). Which is lucky since when I stand behind my car I can feel my eyes burning lol.

I've heard Mazdatrix has better customer service than RB, and my own experience certainly backs this up... so if it's the same stuff, probably better off to order it from Mazdatrix.

Yeah, I heard they're expanding the coverage to Ottawa next year, but mine won't be in the exempt club for another 3 years. That means one more test I think.

Oh well, I don't mind too much. I'm not sure if I'm going to drop my cat once my car gets exempt. I'll probably keep it then as I don't want my car smelling too bad

I'm also thinking about getting springs, the firewall-strut bar, and short shifter from Mazdatrix... I'll be able to afford it eventually

If emissions is an issue for you, as it is for me, then perhaps you should forget the headers (and the cat) and do what I did. I got the downpipe and presilencer, which replaces all the cats and gives 85-90% of the gain of headers w/o cats. How is this emissions legal? It's not, but it's really easy to swap back and forth with the stock cats. When my next emissions test comes up, I just bolt the stock cats back in place, take the test and then swap the DP/PS back in. Just a thought....

My dyno sheet with the Racing Beat DP/PS, in case you are interested:

The problem with Pacesetter headers isn't the paint burning off... all headers burn the paint off, even boinger headers, even RB heavy-wall headers. (The paint on my POSetter headers mostly burned off in the first half hour... FWIW my MIDPIPE turned blue at a track event, rotary exhaust heat is intense!)

The problem with the POSetter headers is that the bolt holes are "in the vicinity" of where they have to be. And they're also too small. Requires lots of grinding and drilling and grinding and checking and grinding and swearing and grinding to actually FIT the headers on the engine. And then there's the problem with the collector - they weld the two pipes together and then the collector pipe over it, and there is a LOT of excess metal in the collector that needs to be ground out if you care about making power. I went at it for a half hour until I got bored, got maybe 75% of it out at any rate.

Paul Yaw has found that the first 4" are essential and they should exit straight out from the engine before the pipes turn back, POSetters bend sharply RIGHT THERE. I'm not even sure that the fact that they're unequal length is as much of an issue as are the awful bends. Testing on Mustang shorty headers found that simple unequal-length headers make as much power as equal-length headers, just because of all the tight bends involved.

Better to choke up the extra $60 and get the RB headers.

Could I just use any stainless steel muffler on it because my friend offered me a brand new Power tech stainless steel muffler for $100 because he bought it and got two? I know that they run very hot but do you think that it could withstand the heat? Thanks

It will be smoked within 1 week. Not worth your 100 bucks.
