Mobil 1 Gear Lube

recently when i changed my tranny oil, i used Mobil 1 Synthetic 70W-90...the tranny acted fine, and didn't get quite as hot as it did before(i have no idea what was in it..could have been the original gear oil) anyway...just today my 3rd gear is starting to grind at high rpm, it isn't my shift technique has anyone else had experience with Mobil 1? i went and priced some Amsoil..as i heard it was good stuff. 12 bux a quart..yikes...

Personally, I think mobil one synthentic gear oil sucks. With the 3-4 different cars I've used it in I still always get grindage when cold, even in warm weather. Use redline or royal purple, they're worth the extra money.
I do use their synthetic oil in my turbo Z, though.

Have you tried Redline? Forum people say it's pretty darn good, albeit expensive.

But seriously now, how often do you change tranny fluid? I'm going to do mine soon... and I hope I won't have to bother with it for some time.

I use Redline MTL in all my manual gearboxes. Never had a problem, even in race cars. About $8 a quart as I recall. Good stuff.

Redline is good, but I eliminated a 3rd gear grind in a tranny full of redline by switching to GM Syncromesh, avaliable at any GM dealer. Incredible stuff.

In my SCCA race car, I change trans fluid once a year, maybe a second time if I do more than 25 hours on it. Even then, it is probably overkill as it comes out clean. I was thinking of straining it next time to see if any shavings are found.

On the street / autocross car, once I put in Redline, I leave it. Should last damn near forever.

Ive been using AMSOIL Series 2000 gear lube in my tranny for over six years now... works better for me than Redline did... smoother shifts
The key to lubricants is once you have found that one particular brand that works best for you is to stick to it.
