Mix screw adjusting?

My 80 is running far to rich, and the book i have on it is not very good at explaining the adjustment of the mixture screw. Can anyone tell me how i should set the mix without using an emmisions check?

the mixture screw only affects idle conditions...my car is running too rich and I am trying to figure out how to fix it as well...
