missing a/c

I'm buying an 85 GSL SE that has no A/C components in the engine bay.

Can anyone give guidance/experience on getting/installing these parts, including the possibility of upgrading to the current coolant?

thanks
John

I live in jersey where it gets pretty hot and humid and I dont have any ac... its just not the same without the windows down and the sunroof out. I'd say just leave them out.

PS.
I used to live right outside of boulder in louisville, cant recall it ever being so hott that u need the ac anyways. But thats just my 2 cents.

As you say, it is not an absolute necessity out here. mostly doing research,

I spent 10 years close to DC, and there's no way I'd make it w/o a/c there!

thanks

Theoretically AC is not an absolute necessity anywhere in any car. But some people including myself appreciate having it. Many RX-7s had the AC fitted after they were shipped to the US. It is not difficult and there are only a few components to add on. If yours already has the evaporator and under dash ducting, i.e., a previous owner removed the underhood components only, it is even less work. The compressors and condensers are still available, as is R12. R134a in an R12 system is not an upgrade, and the system will not be as cold as it otherwise would be with R12. R134a is itself obsolescent and due to be phased out.

a/c components

Don't mean to correct a previous response, but r134a is not obsolete, r12 is being
phased out. It is true that r134a is not as efficent in some systems, but in a mild climate such as yours, it's fine. Now back to your original question. If you decide to use r134a you will need to purchase a new filter drier and expansion valve that is
compatiable to r134a. At minimum you need to replace the filter drier period, never
use an old one. If you are interested in putting the a/c back on, it's pretty straight forward and i can walk you thru where everything goes. Once everything is hooked up you will need to take it to a shop that services a/c and have them
put the system on a vacuum to make sure it holds and they can retro fit to r134a
which i recommend because of the cost of r12. Let me know if you have any other
questions about this. rx7doctor
