Lightbulb Misc, 79' LE/SA....new engine?

I have a LE 79' RX7, I've had her for a half a year now and replaced only what needed to be replaced and all that needed to be replaced as of now.. She runs like a champ and sounds great with the RB mufler but im having a pretty bad oil leak issue. I dont know how much more I can invest into this car at the current time, I really need a DD. Ive been looking into buying a rebuilt engine and found out that the housings are becoming hard/expensive to find. Ive almost lost hope into turning this project into a DD that will last, I have started concidering tradeing for a FC, but i feel for how much I have saved away I will just get another seven and have to start dumping money all over again...I would love your guys advice if I should keep her or stop now...all opions both ways would help out alot thx!

Stick with it!

Where is the oil leak coming from? Pan, front cover, oil cooler lines?

Ya I know I really should shes so fun/classic....I replaced both lines, the oils comming from the side seals near the spark plugs when she starts up, other then that is just seems to be leaking from all over the place, and pan.

Try using a quart of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer in place of one quart of motor oil (don't overfill the crankcase with oil). By the sound of it, your motor needs a rebuild, but you might be able to get by with the Lucas. Stuff works wonders sometimes...

btw, are you sure that the oil is not leaking from the oil filter pedestal?

I have used the luscas does help(alittle) but not enough to where im ok with driving her around, like I said she leaks from both sides of the engine, but for sure does leak out the side seals.

As long as you have the tools you need to get the engine in & out of the car and the housings aren't really damaged or worn out it's cheaper if you do it yourself. I paid 756 for my rebuilding kit & did it myself.

How many miles are on the engine? If it's been maintained well and has less than 100k, there's a good chance the housing are still useable for a rebuild..

Classic - that your LE in the Modesto Craig's List? Should be mentioning the leaks Bro....

For a rebuild you don't need many specialty tools, but a good compliment of metric wrenches and sockets. Do yourself a HUGE favor and spend the $$ and buy a rebuild DVD from Atkins or mazdatrix and actually SEE what's involved and if you feel up to the task. You'll need the DVD anyway as an assist - and if you get it and then decide its over your head, then consider its money well spent instead of all the rebuild bits.
I'm rebuilding one of mine (80 12a) this way in my "parts shed" - I'm no mechanic but a lot of guys here have successfully rebuilt, so i figure I'm game.
