Mikuni sidedraft advice

I've found a Mikuni 48mm sidedraft setup with a mikuni 12A manifold but the guy wants $450 for the setup. Lookin for some thoughts on the Mikunis as the dellorto I want has eluded me for a good year now.

I use the Mikuni setup on my Mariah Mode One, and I'm happy with it. I have it in combination with a Racing Beat exhaust system (sp).
The only problems with a Mikuni are poor cold starting when temperatures are realy low. (like around freezing)
But as far as I know this isn't just a Mikuni problem, but rather common to Weber and Dellorto setups aswell.
Other then that, Mikuni's are pretty good.

Yeah, it has to be a 44PHH, I had one and it worked great for me even in cold weather. Now cool weather were there is a Lot of humidity, that causes icing if you don't vary the throttle in those conditions a lot. Any sidedraft probably needs to be varied when its like that.

Well, I only talked about my personal experiences with a Mikuni 44PHH, and I experienced icing in the winter periods. I've never been to the USA, so I haven't got a clue abot weather zones overthere
Other then that, I like the Mikuni, and will keep it for a while.

Icying isn't usually a problem even in subzero -0F because the air is VERY dry. But usually its weather between 30-60F were humidity is higher then normal with sustained steady highway driving that causes the issue.

I have been running a Mikuni for several years now and love the responsiveness over stock. I too have the RB/Mazdatrix dual exhaust. The only draw back to the Mikuni is finding parts. i have one rebuild kit left and the manual.

Are you selling them? If so, I'm intrested. If not, can you make a copy of the manual? I'm planning a blow-through turbo setup, based on the Mikuni carb, and a rebuild kit, aswell as a manual might come in very handy.
Just PM me if you can help me out. Thanks.

I also have a Mikuni (twin 44mm) side draft setup on my 13B 6-street ported with a RB exhaust (Killer Bee exhaust).
I love the way it sounds, goes fast, and drives smooth. There is opportunity to set the jets (2 of them) but it does require a lot of setting up during variable temperatures. Usually during the fall, but I don't drive mine past the end of September. That's when I store it up in my heated garage for the winter months.
I have a manual but no rebuild parts. If anyone knows where I could get parts that would be great.

For Mikuni parts try overseas auto at http://www.overseas-auto.com/index.html. Have bought jets in all sizes from them, and they have told me that they can get rebuild kits as well - very prompt and reliable service, and one of the guys there has (or had, its been a few months since I last dealt with them) a mikuni running on a first gen 13b transplant.

On the Mikuni 44phh, I have been running it for 5 or 6 years on my '81 streetport - great carb, simple to tune (but limited in terms of finetuning low and high rpm running - e.g. idle will always have to be pretty rich in order to get a good top end), and great power. Use the smallish size venturis (38 - 40 cm, I think), not the larger ones, or you will have serious bog when you nail the throttle. Has a choke (actually an idle richener) so will start reasonably well in colder weather, but will run pretty rough for the first couple of minutes (heel and toe required at stop signs, etc.). People are right about it tending to ice up on cool humid days, but that is a not a major problem unless you are using it on a daily driver in winter.

thanks, I'll have a look!
I have to say my experiences with the Mikuni are very simular to yours. Although I don't use the car as a daily driver, I do take it out on colder days once in a while. And then it can be a pain to start.
But overall, I'm very happy with it. Even if the warm-up is indeed pretty rough.
