Mikuni: Run without Venturis?

So I've just received my rebuild kit today, hopefully it'll resolve some ongoing issues I have. Anyhoo, I've read about people recommending running it without the venturis to make it into a true 44. Any thoughts?

no...
a carburator needs a venturi.
a carburator is measured by the throttle plate, not the venturi size

Yah, the venturi is important because it causes the air velocity to increase as it passes through, allowing better atomization of the fuel.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I figure you always want the venturis to be smaller than the throttle plate to encourage this effect. If you had no venturis, I would assume fuel atomization would be terrible, as well as throttle response killed.

Running sans-venturi would make the throttle plates the only contoll of vacuum, meaning you could never stomp it or you would have nearly no vacuum or air velocity to pull the fuel into the air properly.
The venturi's really just make sure theres always more vacuum and air velocity where you need it, to properly atomize the fuel regardless the position of the throttle plate.

I highly doubt there would be any performance increase unless your engine is hurting real bad for extra air flow.

Interesting topic tho, Im interested to hear some other opinions if this has been done before.

I removed them on the 1/2bp, it ran better with them, even though the carb is a bit small for the porting.

With venturies, it will give you low-end but no go on top. Its like having a speed limiter.

I familiar with what a venturi does in terms of fuel atomization, I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with what wackyracer has recommended. I'll just keep things in mind for now, the carb's not going anywhere

Another question though, the needle valve I got is a 2.0 while the one I took off is a 1.8. What kind of difference will I get going up in size? The one that was on there looks great so I can also install it back.

I cant remember the needle/seat from my orig RR&R mikuni but larger # means less fuel starvation at high RPM.

you may ned to re-jet your carb or adjust fuel pressure slightly to get it to run right at idle or low rpm but does help greatly with the drop at high rpm. is your engine ported? if not may be too much fuel if its a 12a. if you have the smaller venturies you could go up in size with those also, with a 44 the 42mm would be IMHO the most you would want to go. yours are the 38mm? the venturies length can also be played with.
