Mevotech Strut Mounts

Has anyone used a Mevotech strut mounts before? I bought a pair for my 1980, and they seem to be incorrect. OE ones use a thrust bearing at the top. The Mevotech uses a roller bearing. The bearing does not fit over the strut rod correctly, way too loose. It also changes the install height.

Otherwise they look identical. No directions in the box.

I might also add it’s missing the notch to fit the strut rod. Really weird.

You're skunked. Did the same. The 79-80 are (as you are seeing) unique. If you look closely at the listings for these parts, it may say something like "fits 80-85 RX7 from 10/80-on" which is FB/81 production runs. Or it may say "1979-85 RX7 and 626", to discover the only 79-80 model covered is the 626.

I have NEVER seen aftermarket strut tops for SA. Ever. And OE are NLA. If someone has a line on them, PLEASE share!
Hopefully you can either return these or maybe mod the hole to accept the SA strut.

Thanks for replying Stu. After posting this list night I started thinking what you are confirming. Very disappointing. The SA guys always get the short end of the stick. Hopefully the OE ones hold up for a while.

I checked the Mevotech website and they show that this fits the 1980 RX-7 but don't give a date range.

I think it might be possible to make a big washer style adapter that fits into the bearing and has the OEM hole style with two flat sides.

I was wondering if I could do something like that, or even press out the roller bearing and make a replacement flat washer. The problem I see is with the depth or height of the Mevotech mount. Were the bearing sits is approximately 8mm lower than the OE. Add the thickness of any washers I have to add or make, and it would be over 10mm different in height. Which would raise the height of the car (if my thinking is correct).

Im not sure the surgery to try is worth it at this point. The OE
aren't broken to say at the moment. I will probably by changing out to FB stuff later on.

If anyone has done mods to these mounts before I’d be open ears to how they did it.
