Metal in the oil pan?????

Si Ive started to take apart my 12a, and when I removed the oil pan today I found alot of metal shaving's. They were of good size. Any one care to guess what damage I might have. Also does anyone have any good tricks to remove the chain off the oil pump? I cant keep it from spinning. thank!!!!!!

The metal shaving could be chrome coming off the housings. After long were on the housing they flake off the chrome. It causes lower compression. As far as the oil pump chain, I think there is two bolts that you can take off to loosen the chain, however I'm not sure about that one.

Wouldn't chrome be more of a flake versus a shaving since it is a coating. Not questioning your answer cuz I have not had this problem yet. It seems more logical though since chrome is just a coating such as paint.

Most likely the bearing are toast, could be mains or rotor or both. Usually the rear bearing goes first caused by low oil pressure. Not sure about the oil pump chain. Make certain to clean or replace the oil cooler and lines, if you have a front mount cooler.

There's no way the chrome would make it's way back into the oil pan even if there was flaking. Most probably the bearings.

If you're having trouble removing the sprocket nut just wedge it with a screwdriver.

Housing chrome has only one place to go, out the exhaust port.

In addition to bearings, the flakes can come from the stationary gears, rotor gear teeth. Not a good sign.

bearings are toasted... not good !!!as cpa7man said, oil cooler and lines must be cleaned well.. as far as the shavings being attributed to chrome flaking, impossible!!!! TSI extreme, please dont give fals info, people read what you type, and might even beleive it too!
