You can do without it.

The thermal reactor, much like a catalytic converter, needs a fresh air source to operate and without it will burn out, possibly damaging the engine in the process.

It's not as easy as the blanket 'ditch it' statement from Alex-7 may suggest.

So I can take it off as long as I take the Cat off also? Cool that helps as I was planning on dumping the cat anyhow.

Yeah that I know. It is mainly going to be a race car but I am going to keep it regestered which means I will have to get it tested once a year, and it will need the cat to pass the smog test

Keep the emmisions stock. You will not pass CO's test without the air pump and cat. You can remove the pump and install an aftermarket header and exhaust setup, if you keep the stock setup to put back on for testing.

So what is the air pump for? Mine was not connected to anything so I was not sure but the only connection I saw looked like it pluged in to the stock air box on the carb, but that is getting changed also.

Air pump pumps fresh air into the cats to help clean up the exhaust and preserve the cat. Download th 85 FSM in the stickies, the emmisions should be similiar enough to get yours hooked up correctly.

You may want to search on "Rats Nest Removal" this will explain how to remove all the unecessary crud under the hood.
