major power loss in my 12a help!!
So I've done some looking around and I haven't been able to find my problem on here so I'm making this post.
The other day, when I was driving, my car started to lose power. It would still drive, but when I would try to go faster, the rpm's either wouldn't go higher, or they would very very slowly. If I really stepped on it to the floor practically, it would then accelerate quickly and normally like nothing was wrong until I got to higher rpm's. It doesn't seem to be compression though. Also, when I'm sitting still, when I rev it up a bit and let it go back to idle, the rpm's drop way down like it's going to die, but then they go back up to a normal idle.
Anyone with any ideas or if someone has had the same issue please let me know asap.

Does the car start right up?
Does it rev well in neutral?
Are you able to drive like an old lady without losing power?
If you answer yes to these questions, but lose power when accelerating as onto a freeway, there is a good chance that the fuel pickup in the tank is severely clogged.
If you've never cleaned the tank, it almost certainly has a lot of gunk and rust deposits on the bottom. This detritus is drawn to the fuel pickup, which is no longer protected by the mesh filter which long ago disintegrated.
Searching 'tank cleaning' or my favorite 'marine clean' will reveal some good threads on the tank cleaning procedure. Removing the tank will also afford you an excellent opportunity to replace the 30 year old fuel lines that exit and enter the tank.
It seems like a big job, but I did it in about 4 hours total and I am not mechanically inclined whatsoever.
And don't forget to put a new filter sock on the pickup. The original is NLA, just go to the parts store and sort through the selection, you'll find one that works.
I put the job off for two frustrating months thinking I might clean the tank one filter at a time. It don't work that way.
Good luck.
