Question Major Electricle Problem

I got my 1980 rx7 to keep miles off of my 82 and I got it running just fine and now this happens. When you turn the car on to accs on the ignition, you hear the fuel pump working but as soon as you put on the brake, the fuel pump shuts off. When you let go of the brake, the fuel pump comes back on. When you turn the car on, The same thing happens, but the hazard lights and the lights on the outside turn on. Keep in mind the lights are turned off. When the car is on, the same thing happens to the fuel pump. So im kinda in a bind. I was wondering what could it be, I checked the fues's and they are all fine. Thanks for the help.

I thought I had a problem with the fuel pump too, I hot wired it and put in a switch under the steering wheel, so I could turn it on and off as a sort of ant theft device.

Yea I have the same thing in my 82 rx7 but I think this is a little bit more complicated than just a switch for the fuel pump

I've read a few threads where strange things happen when you press on the brake pedal and it has been a ground at the rear of the car, inside the hatch. I don't know where it would be on your '80, though. It may not be the cause in your case, but it would be worth checking.

Hey thanks, I think if I cant find the problem, I will just rewire the fuel pump and put it on a switch inside so I wont have to worry about it.

Speaking of such... If I put my headlights in the "flash to pass" position, where you pull it back, they go on. But, if I push foreward, and put it in the high-beam position, my headlights do not work at all.

But if i have my headlights on, and put in flash to pass, they both light up (like they should).... But still, cant get high beams to work with the switch. I took the whole steering wheel off, and the whole surround around it... Cleaned all of the contacts and the switches... and still nothing.

Ideas?

Good for you!

Traiko: If the high beams work in either position (push or pull) the problem has to be in the combination switch. You still have bad contacts. The voltage comes from the same source within the switch and both positions use the same wire coming out of the switch.

I ahve had the EXACT same problem with my 83 GSL for about 5 years. The dealer told me it was the combination switch and it had to be replaced - big bucks for the switch and labor to pull the steering wheel, etc. Maybe someday I'll put in a new combo switch if needed - for now I can live without it.

If I just get that whole switch assembly... whipers, lights, yadda from a junkyard, can I just plug it in to my car now? Or will there be some weird, un thoght of issues...?

Cuz I don't mind doing that, to get my beams. To get to my house, you take tons of downhill windy roads. I know the roads like the back of my hand at night, but there's lots of critters out there that I wouldn't mind staying far away from my front end. :\

Speaking of which, I ran over a mole, or mouse or something running across the road last night... He cought the new treads on my tire and flew into my wheel well. I heard him make contact. I checked it out this morning, and there's this little chunk of fuzz stuck in the back part of my well... Poor guy :~(

I think you have to pull the steering wheel. That's one reason I haven't gone to my local reclamation facility. I don't have a steering wheel puller.

You don't need any sort of special puller, it's just screws, and no springs or anything to worry about. At least my buddy didn't need anything special when he pulled his 85 steering wheel off.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Speaking of pullers, be sure you use a steering wheel puller. It is possible to use a regular puller, but just don't smack it with a hammer!
