Help no break lights

I have a short some were and don't know were to start looking.
When I push on the brakes the defrost, stop and turn signals lights come on about 90% of the time and when this happens my brake lights go dim and the turn signals get bright. When I have my head lights on it only happens about 80% of the time. While I'm driving the dash lights will come on and off so I was thinking it had to be some wires that were under the hood or under the car because as the the moved it would complete the circuit some times.

I have to get this fixed I have already been pulled over 3 times for it.

sounds like a wiring harness bundle is shifting when you hit the brakes and grounding frayed wires. Have you removed the panel under the steering column and inspected the harness?

Not yet that is part of todays activities. Along with checking all of the connectors under the hood.

Well it ended up being a loose ground wire on the rear hatch.
GEO46 told me to check that. Its crazy that one ground wire could cause so many problems.

Right there, Mike

It's a little ground wire with a loop crimped onto it. It grounds the whole rear lighting system, so if it's not on there, it'll cause all kinds of problems. I hooked mine around the bolt that holds the lisence plate light in on my car (different style rear end on the '79).

should be in the hatch area somewhere, wired into one of the harnesses that goes to the brake lights themselves, right next to the light. Mine was on the passenger's side, and was a single wire with a crimped loop on it, which I promptly attached... it worked perfectly after.
