Main Cat Glowing Wtf!!

Wel i got an 83 with 100k+ on it. It was sitting outside for a long time. I changed everything for spark plugs to coils. I put a new main cat and started the ******.
Ran fine for a little then the rpm goes to 2k. I waited and thought it would settle down. It started to smoke from the bottom and found my main cat GLOWING ORANGE. I was told the timing is off. Fuel burning in the cat. Some say the muffler is clogged. WAT can it be!!

It would be a good idea to check the timing, it seems as if you might be burning a little rich. Is the cat brand new? The idle going to 2k is strange, could be a vaccuum leak. Are there any mods on the car? headers? stock exhaust?

check timing, check to see if you are running rich. You might want to step on the accelerator down to see if any critters come out of the exhaust. If it is still glowing, that means your new cat is bad. I have seen at least three cars with brand new cats go bad. Especially if they are some generic brand from a muffler shop or auto parts store.

On a side note, did you put ATF in the car after you installed the cat???? That can clog it also. Maybe it had it in the engine already????

If you can't get a new cat, worst thing worst, you can gut that one.

Theres some black things that would come out from the muffler. Little things that would hit my hand. I got the cat at auto zone though.I thinking its the timing. And how do u check the timing and how do u adjust iit?

The problem might be the autozone cat. Rotaries run hotter than most other cars.

I have the same problem with my main cat. Basically...there's fire coming from the exhaust manifold where I look. I can literally see a little part of the exhuast manifold where it has a slit and a little torche of fire is coming from it. Everything behind is it just plain out orange. I'm really aggravated about it. I hanv't started my 7 for 3 weeks now. I gave up on the exhaust and engine. I'm just waiting for enough $$$ so I can get enough for a entire new catback and TII engine w/ TII tranny and Rear LSD with discs, from a GSL-SE. I can't wait...

Make sure to check your leading coil's resistence and the ignitor for the leading plugs. Once, a leading coil went out on my blow-through 12a car, and my turbo/manifold started to glow dull orange even when not driven hard, not a good thing telling me the fuel was not burning up completely-not to mention considerably less power then it should normally have/and some engine hesistation.
