Lsd

I have a 1984 gs, and I was wondering how difficult, and how expensive it would be to swap in an LSD?

It is actually pretty damn easy either way you do it.

You can swap out just the pumpkin in an hour. 1st make sure you get an 84-85 rear end (they have larger axles). Lift it, drain it, pull off the wheels and rear brakes, then unbolt the rear baking plates and pull the axles out about 6 ". Unbult the pumpkin and swap in the LSD. Bolt it back together again and fill it with 90 wt with a limited slip additive.
Or
Swap the whole axle by unbolting the drive shaft, control arms and shocks. Make sure that you get emergecy brake cables on your new LSD rear axle.

I have found several LSD rear for around $150

Second method gives you rear disc brakes also.

Doing the second could also change the bolt pattern for your wheels so be careful

Just pulled one from an 83 car last weekend. I will sell if for $150. If you want I will pull the chunk and brakes and send them in a box.

I don't drift often, maybe for 1 to 2 hours every 2 weeks if that. I remember reading somewhere that the lsd will need to be rebuilt occasionally. Any info on that guys?

I am doing that very thing right now. Dropped the tranny and rear end from my SE yesterday. Very easy to do, one man job. Patience though, I had some serious rust under neath. Suspension bolts were tough but eventually got em. Had to drill out the rotors though, the two phillips screws that hold the rotor to the axle were tight. Kept busting bits, even with the hammer drill. I intend to use the axles from my GS with the drums so I was not concerned ( have a GSL out back anyway ). Gonna sandblast the entire rear end and primer it. Have to rebuild it as well, pulled the plug and had little curls of metal ( not flakes ). Fluid loooked really good though. Doing the clutch and pressure plate as well, I figure I will get all my parts from Racing Beat unless someone has a better source. Heavy duty street/strip clutch and pressure plate. I let you know how it goes, so far so good. Want to have her ready to go by April.
