Get the whole rear end. The 83 axles are smaller than the 84-85 axles.

yeah i've gathered that it's a straight bolt-in swap if you take the whole rearend.

Ask somebody else who has done this.
Or somebody who knows for sure.

I *beleive* that the driveshaft/spline pattern is different for the newer 84/85 models from the 83 and older models.

If so, you would probably need some work with the driveshaft as well.

Actually the split point is '83. '83-85 have the same driveshaft, while '82-earlier have a different one. The only difference is the bolt pattern at the rear flange - all splines relating to the driveshaft are identical.

'83 was a weird year... it had the new driveshaft bolt pattern and the new oil "cooker" and the new lightweight rotors but the old everything else.

Now you know why I said ask somebody who knows for sure.

I had an 83 GSL once (for about two months) until a Drunk Driver rammed into me. That was a great ride.
Too bad it was totalled. It was the fastest stock 12A I had ever seen. It used to take (stock) 5.0 mustangs through like 70 mph with that car. Ahh.. Memories.

so peejay what if i don't want to get everything could i just ger the diff and put it in?? cause on rx7.co they have a diff for sale that they said quote:

ATTENTION SPEC-7 RACERS, and other rx7 owners.
Through some strange circumstances we ended up with a BRAND NEW!!! 1983 RX7 limited slip differential assembly. This unit is Mazda new in the box, it has NEVER been installed and is in perfect condition. Actually, we had to break the original sealing tape on the box in order to take the picture.
Mazda part # M092-27-100B retail price $1706.60 this one only $472.00
This unit will fit perfectly in a 1983 rx7 (with disk or drum brakes).
If used in a 1981-82 models you will need to acquire a 1983-85 5 speed driveshaft (will fit disk or drum brake rear end)

Now wait a minute. A few yrs ago i had my diff go out on me in lower downtown denver, so i went to a local pull-n-save and to see if i could pic one up cheap. The only one they had was a lsd from an 82 and just from eyeballing it, i bought it. Everything bolted up the exactly the same, the difference though was the carrier ring around the diff housing that fits inside the (pumpkin?) was smaller. Eventually I got the original one rebuild and when i did my brake overhaul (pistons needed rebuilt), I replaced it. The down time was a few months and there was no adverse wear on any components i took out and replaced. Just food for thought,

Or go for an aftermarket 'Torsen' type for about $795 that is heaps better than any LSD and can fit into all Gen 1 rearends. A direct 'pumpkin' swap only, for a brand spaking new highest quality billet stell one.

it could have been from a car that had already swapped to the 82 LSD with a early driveshaft. The diff will fit, but the bolt pattern on the driveshaft is supposed to de different.

Anybody else?

Gleason-Torsen diffs are the best. instead of limiting slip then locking, they mechanically transfer grip to the wheel with the most traction. (Torsen=TORqueSENsing)

Hi, from the website that is USD, the are full Torque Biasing Diffs, 'i.e. Torsen, but Torsen is a trademark registered so they cannot be called that.

Much better that the 'real thing' as they are made out of billet steel (i.e. the highest quality) not cast 'low quality' etc

They are being run in street/drag cars producing up to 600 rwhp (a highly modified 13B twin Turbo).

The weak point then in the rear-end of all RX7's is the axles and actual diff gears, for gen 1 you can buy a floating hub kit which comes with thehighest quality billet axle's for $1380 if you want to really strengthen up your rear-end.
