loose tranny

well, solid mount tranny+ engine rubber mount+ torquy turbocharged engine= disaster

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/260761/10

last monday i was going to my house from work and i see that my transmision was moving kinda bad so i took it easy on the car and i too a left hand side turn to go to my house and the hole thing felt to the crossmember, i stop because the spacer felt off too and luckilly i found it because it was dark. so i kreep all the way to my house that was about 100 feet from were it happened because the driveshaft was hitting the exhaust. looked at it yesterday and one of the bolt holes lost the tread i gess because of the torque or what and i just put a couple of helicoils on and new bolts and is good to go now. hopefully doesnt happened again. just a reminder to check your tranny mount on FB with turbo II trannys every once in a while because this could happened to you

if you solid mount the engine and the tranny, it help on the shifting the gears but the disadvantage of it you will feel every jerking and vibration of the engine thru the car and it sucks. i wish they make a rubber or poliruthane mount for the TII tranny on FB

I think a better approach would involve using the softer rubber mounts first, then trying both gearbox and engine mounts solid later.

I don't get the attraction towards using solid mounts for anything other than a totally track car.

For the tranny, none!

The engine/trans assembly is mounted on a tripod - two engine mounts and one tranny mount. So the tranny mount basically controls pitching motions and the engine mounts control rolling motions. Well, there are no pitching motions to be controlled, and there is a LOT of rolling motion! So it makes sense to solid mount the ENGINE mounts, and continue using the standard tranny mount in order to take up the slack with respect to chassis flex, thermal expansion, and any other dimensional changing.
