Looking for a 12A

I have an '82 RX-7 with about 150,000 miles on the motor and I'm sure they're hard miles. I'd like to change the motor. All the rebuild places I look are a bit pricier then I want to spend. They're going about $1800 and I want the whole project to come off under $2500. Including paying someone to install the new beastie. Anyone know where I can get a fresher 12A?

well for $1,800 the rebuild isnt going to have too many new parts in it, thats for sure.....where have you price checked so far?

That seems to be the going rate online. I've been to about 4 or 5 websites and all the prices were the same. $1795 and a $250 to $500 core charge.

IMHO I'd buy one from a company, and intall it myself. For $2500 you could even have them install a NEW lightweight flywheel then all you have to do is drop it in. Its not that hard of a job and it doesnt weigh a whole lot. For that money you can get alot done for and install it yourself. Even if you have to beg a buddy to do it in his lawn, its worth it! You can prolly save enough to get a ported motor, unless you have emissions testing ect then you just want a bone stock which isnt hard. Hold of as long as you can before having someone else do it for you, you'll appreciate it in the end. Ask lots of questions and get suspicions off your mind and find the answers to them. Of course when you ask if you can find a fresher engine your gonna get answers like look in the junk yards, look in the classifieds or even few shops. But a newly rebuild engine is way better off, and they'll warrenty it for what you'd prolly get out of another used engine. Thats aprox 2 years or 20k miles IIRC. Your motor prolly is good for rougly that long, could be less, could be more, but if you dont need to rely on it alot then just drive it and have fun. ! There will be more responses.

Trust me I'd love to be able to drop it in myself. The first motor change I ever did was an old RX4 that my dad and I droped a new motor into. I have health problems now and can't do all that work.

Where do you live exactly? There are rotary builders that install also.

I'm in Northern California. About 25 miles North/East of San Francisco.
