locked dizzy mods (pics) thoughts?

I welded the weights on the inside, so I didn't have centrifical advance. Disconected the vacuum lines so no vacuum advance. but I was still left with those rather large unsightly dashpots. Last night I got my ebay auction dizzy delivered. It was less than $30.00 shipped. As we all know the dashpots kinda get ugly with age and these were no exception. I took them off, welded the shaft in place on the back side. Then pulled out the dremel and proceeded to cut off the dash pot. Little more grinding, welding, sanding, and painting later I'm left with what you see in the pictures. The one on the right is for sale on ebay, just search "12a LOCKED" that'll bring it up for you if interested.

So, after all that what ya think?

Those weights look like they're in the fully advanced position. Excellent.

Isn't that how you advised me to do it also dont have to worry about the welds breaking. The weights are butt up right next to the respective slots. The welds are not taking all the force while spinning. I found a nice easy way to keep them in position while I weld too.

I really appriciate that, now all i need is about 40 or 50 more bidders and I'll be happy. I'll settle for 1 or 2 with fat bank acounts fighting it out till the bitter end If it sells for 50.00 thats cool too got my money back. Also, if your interested I can mod the dashpots for another $20.

Ill get some pics of it in the car later. tomorrow have to change the clutch and other great little mx stuff.

I am about ask what may appear to be a stupid question.

What is the benefit of forcing the timing to be fully advanced? Is there any difference between offing the dashpots, yanking the vacuum advance, or sparking the weights?

Sell me on the idea and ya might get another bidder.

Anyone have personal experience of driving with a locked dizzy? I'm interested to know how it compares with stock. Does the engine rev up a little faster from the low end?

Its more for simplicity. I have a locked dizzy on my roadrace car and my DD. Im prolly going back to regular dizzy on the streetcar. The vac/cent advance helps with gas milage, starting and such. Definately worth it for a racecar cause it simplifies it. One less thing to go wrong, and we're at 5k or more most of the time (full advance comes in about 4k on a stock dizzy). Nice work BTW, cleaner look.

The dashpot belongs on a carb. I think he just sets the LT split, then forgets it.

Yes, I am still able to set and adjust the trailing timing. The dashpot just has a rubber diaphram and a spring inside. The vacuum from the engine effects the diaphram making it move the arm attached to the diaphram and the electronic pickups inside. if your not running vacuum advance then it just sits there. I welded that arm directly to that part of the dashpot that adjusts the leading trailing split. Just loosen the screws move the base back and forth adjusts the LT split.

and as Jeff20B stated. since im running turbo, I set it and forget it

The dashpot belongs there if your running vacuum advance. if not then all its there for is to hold the LT split. I just made it less obtrusive.

Didn't Paul Yaw's site say that a locked dizzy would actually increase fuel economy, just at the expense of a slightly rougher idle? Or did I read that part wrong.
