Leaking Gas

Hey you guys im am having a problem with gas coming out of my gas door. From what i have been noticing is that when i take a sharp right turn or even a slighty hard right turn, gas comes out of the gas door and leaks from the bottem. i have checked the little hinge for when you take your cap off and it seems pretty firm. Can it be my gas cap ? it doesnt seem like it should be. Thanks for input

probably not your gas cap. gravity does not permit gas escaping in that manner. i would venture to say you either have a small hole in the top of the tank or your fuel level sender gasket is bad. how much gas in the tank is required to cause the leak when turning?

Could be the gascap actually. Kentetsu's car was doing that at Deal's Gap on right handers. Although he may have mentioned he does not have a gascap at all. I can't remember.

Does this happen when your tank is full or nearly full or just at any time at all? A really hard right hander causes all the fuel to slosh to the left which can force it up the fill tube and out the gas door. Have a look at the gascap seal. If that's fine then it could be a hole in the tube or as mazdaverx713b said, check the tank, or sender.

Yes, my car does this as well with anything more than about 5 gallons. Gas cap has been replaced, still does it. One of those nuisance items that I really need to get around to fixing. Almost seems like the top of the filler neck is loose or something. I'll be interested in hearing opinions on this topic, especially from those who have experienced this and repaired it. Thanks...

How about the drain tube? If you look at your filler neck there is really two tubes that transport gas. One is like a "overspill" collection tube, could that be broken/leaking?

X2... I competed last weekend in my recently completed S2 (FB to you guys).

I've copied and pasted the text below from my post in AusRotary.

As I pulled into the pits the fire guys came over and said there was another report of fuel spilling out of the rear of the car on right handers.

The main fire marshal was great, he climbed under the car and found a open hose from the top of the tank. I thought it was the over flow hose from the fuel filler neck, but we found that hose and from our obstructed view, it appeared to be connected back to the top of the tank... So we blanked off what we thought was a redundant extra hose :-k We then cleaned up the fuel spill on the tank and surrounding panels and he gave us his blessing to head on back out.

So I rechecked the regulator pressure (it was down to 2 psi for some reason) adjusted it back to 4psi and then reset the float levels.

Headed back out for the third session and the motor felt great all the way to ~7,000 in 3rd and 4th and pulling an easy 6,000 in 5th down the straight, the brakes had re bedded back in (rusty discs) and I my tyres were starting to warm up... The track was now dry and pretty clean, I was out behind my mate in his older XR6 ute and unlike my red S1 I actually had to back off 200m early for turn one at EC as I had pulled him in down the straight (we used to be dead even on the straights in my red S1). He then under steered into turn 3, so I made sure it was safe and then snuck up the inside and took him... It was all great, but then I saw him sliding behind me on right handers... Red flag pointed at me and I was greeted by the fire crew again. We couldn't find the leak but the whole fuel tank was wet on the passenger side this time, so I loaded it straight onto the trailer acknowledging that I need to drop the tank tomorrow.

With its bum in the air on the trailer, another mate crawled underneath and found yet another largish open fuel hose... Turns out some body has had the tank off and I would suggest they didn't drop it with the filler neck attached and cut the hose filler neck overflow hose. When they refitted the tank they've fitted one hose to the filler neck and another to the tank... Hence to two open ends.

The fuel tank is the only part of the car I didn't remove or replace... I even replaced/replumbed all the pump, check and return lines and assumed the tank was OK as I could see it had new mounting bolts and that they were done up tight... Never assume anything... This simple oversight could have seen the car go up in flames #-o Lucky I had all my fire proof gear on

Thanks very much for that post. Nobody has dropped the tank on my car, but I will get under there and get if figured out. I'm supposed to be at Road Atlanta in July for Zoom Fest, and it would really suck if I drove 12 hours down there only to get black flagged. lol.

You're welcome mate... I hope you get it sorted without too much trouble

As for fuel coming out the fuel flap... Make sure your cap has a good rubber seal on it. Some guys remove the seal to try and remedy other issues. Fuel will easily work it's way right up the filler neck on right handers... Easily! If you don't believe me, try driving around with a glass of water 3/4 full
