painting moldings

My car goes into the bodyshop monday. I am keeping a dark red similar to factory. I am tried to decide whether to remove the rubber side moldings and put them back on after painting (risk of damaging moldings, very costly), leave them as is and mask around them (80's factory look) or have them painted to match the car (more modern)

You could always look at some of the guys Sa/Fbs around here that have the moldings off to see if you would like them on or off Or try to take them off carefully if you can and leave them off after you get your car painted and if you decide that you dont like the look, just get them put back on. im getting my car painted over summer as well and im going to keep the molding off since im missing 2 peices of them ( think they fell off on the highway or something ) since they cost alot to replace.

I don't recommend painting the rubber trim mouldings. A good door ding or time and the paint peels. If you want to spruce them up, use 0000 steel wool and mineral spirits for cleaning, then Mother's Back to Black to treat them.

Without using the proper paint for rubber, it will peel off and crack since rubber will expand or contract based on outside temp.

I say keep it original and every now and then, apply a coat of black shoe polish to make it shiny.

One door ding without them and you'll wish you kept them.

+1. I use Meguiars hot shine after every wash. Works amazing.

I removed all the moldings, drip rails and windshield molding. Good thing too! There was a rust spot under one molding, this would've been making an appearance soon! Now the decision is, moldings or no moldings?? Paint the bumper body color and decide later, could put moldings on without the black strip on the bumper?? Chime in guys, gotta decide tomorrow!
