Leak around transmission tail

It's an '84 gslse with manual transmission. Small leak around select lock spindle - or some kind of name like that, but I could be totally wrong.
Hoping someone could give me some info. Is there a gasket? Or sealant?
Would the shifter need to be removed?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

There is a gasket there. Watch out if removing because there's a ball bearing and spring behind there.

Is it dripping? I don't think there should be fluid there, just grease for the shifter.

I'd just clean it up and keep an eye on it. If it builds up quick-ish then think about a new gasket.

j_tso, there is no dripping at all. Just the build up of what I had assumed was the beginning of a leak.
Toruki, I will get to cleaning it this weekend and start watching.

Thank you gentlemen for the information and slowing me down from jumping to conclusions.

Good decision, the urge to re-seal should be tempered!
these old cars ooze from strange places and cleaning with brake clean is a good idea to find real leaks.

It kind of looks like undercoating overspray to me. Could just be tarring up from seeping for many years. Nothing to be concerned about at this stage. At this point, I would do what the others have suggested and clean it and monitor it.

Thank you again to everyone. I was falling in to the trap of: "while I am here I will also..."

So, I will clean up the area and start putting everything else back together as my short 2 month refresh has now exceeded 7 months.

There should be oil in there. It all leaks out through the shifter shaft passage eventually and should be replenished any time you have the shifter removed. Just a little bit of gear oil is all it takes.

Peejay, note taken and good timing on advice. Hopefully I can get back to it next weekend. Had house repairs this past weekend. Thanks again.
