Well I can tell you really want an answer. The j-spec first gen actaully got three engines. The first is a normal 12a, (probably whats in that one) around 1980, they introduced a 6 port 12a (still carbed tho) and in 83 and 84 they got the 12Aturbo, (fuel injected) whereas we got a 6 port 13B in 84.

 

You can basically get any car into the country that's 25 years old or more. If you can find one, you can get it over here for probably less than $2500 after paying shipping, customs, etc.

Most people just cut a car in half, ship it over, and swap all the parts over onto an American chassis. Or the less legal way, import it as a race car, swap the VIN numbers, and "distory" the American car with the Jap VIN. The trick is not getting caught. $100,000+ fine, plus you lose the car.

But it's surprising easy to cut out a firewall and weld in a RHD one, especially if you have the clip.

 

If I was gooing to try and get that much money out of my car I definitely would have cleaned the car up more. That car looks dirty.

You have an M1? How do you like it? Does it handle good? I love the way they look, they are the best looking BMW's up until the 95 M3's.

 

I don't have an M1. If I had an M1, I wouldn't be posting here, I'd be out driving it.

There are also lots of cars here that were NEVER sold here, so that there's no way you can just switch VINs. You can find some neat stuff in the US that was never sold here in any form, like say for instance Lancia Delta Integrales. Also some Escort Cosworths, and lots other goodies.

Car looks pretty awesome. All it needs are some mods, like maybe a 20B That might be worth 10k.

 

I do not think that the early Savannah's had a rer wing. Mine does not have one.

As far as the mirrors go they do not look like the proper mirrors.

Mine look different and are POWER!

My car in titled and insured with State Farm. No one ever asked me if it was Right hand Drive or not.

I got the titlle by applying for a mechanic's Lean in Louisiana. This way I can get titles for ANY car wheter it has even been titled or not.

 

The rear spoiler was a dealer installed option in the US. Dunno about home-market.

 

I've read many books about old japanese cars and they say that the LHD 1st generation rx7 is actually better than the RHD counterpart. They said that the rx7 seven was originally designed for the american market where most cars are usually designed as a RHD. I also read that the SA22C was first sold in the states before they were sold in japan. I believe all this is true because I read this in about 4 or 5 books from back in japan such as the RX-7 Magazine.

 

BMW M1's are really cool. probably way to hard to get parts for and too expensive, but defenitely unique and my favorite bmw. My friend has a E30 M3 but it falls to my 7 all the time, i kinda feel bad for him when i rip him in my 1st gen that i paid less than 5k for and he has a 15k dollar m3. oh well to each his own.

Oh and a comment on the RHD 7's, I own a 78 RHD SA, and the RHD's are a little lighter than the LHD's because they didnt have to stand up to as stringent crash tests as the american market ones, so they dont have door bars, no safety glass, bumper were lighter etc. an ausi site claims they are 200 lbs ligher, i dont know that i believe this and i have never weighed mine, it needs an engine right now.

I emailed the owner of the car to see if he actually wanted to sell.

He said the price is firm. i guess he does not really want to sell it.

 

Ya, no one will ever pay that. i saw a RHD FD on ebay about 3 weeks ago. It went for like $10500, plus estimated shipping > 2k. it was a 93 and looked really clean. no way he will get that for the POS SA.
