ford 8.8 from a mustang, little custom work but overall not that hard if you can fabricate/weld

Depends on what application you want to use it for. Kaaz, MX-5 TorSen, Quaife, or Ford as above, etc.

The Kaaz and Torsen should fit without any fabrication or welding.

I just started a thread on this the other day. The Miata torsen unit is more narrow than the older FB unit, so the axles don`t quite go in all the way, but people allege there is no problem on stock HP numbers.
So far as Kaaz goes, DBZ1810 is the KAAZ part number (1.5 way, I believe) for the FC N/A LSD unit. 7" ring gear, same as the FB models. It SHOULD go in no problem, but I don`t know yet if you will lose some axle shaft engagement or not. I need to get a s4 GXL LSD and compare it to the GSL LSD to see if there would be any problems, but that will be awhile...
On a side note, I at first heard that mazdaspeed LSDs (and most other upgraded stockers, like Nismo and TRD) were made by Hitachi (from club4ag, I think), but then I heard they were remans by Kaaz, so I don`t know. I`m too lazy to find out. Either way, though, I heard the mazdaspeed units were pretty good and they are a bit cheaper than Kaaz.

If they make one for a 1990-1993 mazda miata, then that one also works for the FB.
Incase any of you guys didn't know, 90-93 miata rear gears swap in to a FB rear.
I've done it a few times and there's plenty of write ups online.

I was under the impression that the 90-93 miata rears were 6" ring gears and the axle sizes were different. I haven`t seen any writeups on 90-93 miatas to 1st gen rx7s. Do you have any bookmarked? I would be interested to check it out. Did the 1st gen Miatas even have LSD in their rears?
Speaking of Miatas, I was searching earlier, and the 94+ Roadstar Eunos (Miata) here in Japan has the same KAAZ part number as the NA 2nd gen in the states. And guess what, it is quite a bit cheaper here. I plan on buying one in a couple weeks and shipping it home.
It pays to learn Japanese. heh

Actually, I don`t think I answered your question, fictionrx. woops
There are numerous places online to buy Kaaz stuff from.
For example:
www.upgrademotoring.com
http://www.sportcarmotion.com/kaaz%20lsd.htm
I can`t recommend either place, as I haven`t ordered anything from them. Actually, I did place an order with upgrademotoring a long time ago, but had to cancel it when they couldn`t get the parts from Japan, but anyways...
You might search around using that part number.

Why not just put an oversized disc in the stock LSD clutch pack. Tightens it up ~33% more than stock and costs less than a Kaaz. We did a thread on this a few days ago.

Isint the Kazz the unit that exerts tremendous pressure on the spider gears to make it act like a limited slip unit? Ive read alot of bad **** on it, and it makes sense to me that its a crappy way to lock a rear.

No, KAAZ works like a normal clutch style LSD. Perhaps you are thinking of phantom grip.
There are a lot of other alternatives to KAAZ, or Cusco, or whoever. I`ve heard of people putting in extra clutchpacks on the rebuild to get some extra grab with stock LSD units along the lines of what you guys were talking about. Mazdacomp clutchpacks aren`t that expensive either. Rebuilding your own LSD would certainly be cheaper than aftermarket.
I personally haven`t tried out KAAZ yet, but I`ve heard a lot of good things and it is well priced, so I am going with that.
Anyways, I suppose the best advice is do your homework and make the best decision.

.

yeah phantom grip is crap. I have used that brand on a 1995 nissan 200sx and it broke the tranny after about 2 months. It was determined that the damage was from the phantom grip unit. I wonder who designed that crap, I'd like to kick them.

Oh yea, thats what I was thinking of. Anyway, theres lots of info on tightening up the Mazda LSD. Id go that route, or get a torsen from a Miata.

David Lane has the Torsen in his turbo-charged GSL-SE. He's putting down about 300 hp and got custom-made axles that are a little longer. For people with stock or closer-to-stock engines, that's not necessary. As a rule-of-thumb, stock axles will probably get you by unless you're over 250 hp.

Note: Dave doesn't do any drag racing. For those that do that sort of thing, the rule-of-thumb should probably be about 220 hp, IMHO.
