HELP!!!! Fusible link issues

I'm in the final stages of putting my 83 GSL together. Somehow, in the midst of the removal and reassembly process, I blew a fusible link.. Headlights wouldn't go up or turn on. They worked fine until very recently. No problem, I still have all the fusible links from my donor. I switched all three fusible links (after removing the negative cable), making sure that they are in the right order (brown, black, brown). I put the negative cable back on and one of the brown fusible links starts to smoke. I immediately pull the cable back off and come to the professionals for help.. What happened? and how can I fix it?

You have a power short to ground somewhere.

I just noticed that I had the headlight up switch on when I reconnected the battery.. Could that cause it to smoke? I'm fairly sure that I have no bare wires to ground.. I double checked all the wiring when I had it stripped down..

No.. everything is connected correctly.. Car runs fine and everything else works.. Or at least, did, before I swapped links.. haven't reconnected the battery yet.. I know about that battery thing.. My dad did that when I was growing up and it exploded in his face.. Nasty burns...
