Question K&N filter

Will replacing my air filter to the K&N filter add any difference in performance on my carb 12a?

Is it worth it?

You will ONLY get the HP increase, if the filter comes with a decal you can put on the car.

The K&N filter is like $70 w/shipping (around here).

Just spend the $140 and get the cold-air intake kit from Rotary Performance, it comes w/a K&N tapered cone type filter. Then you may actually see a performance gain, especially if you have a good exhaust system on the car...

Whoops, sorry!

I just noticed you have a carbed 12a. The street or race kit from RP is made for the 13b SE's.

Please disregard my idiotic first post, thanks!

Not for the nikki carb! You would have to ghetto fob something from scratch using rubber hose or something using the stock airbox. For a webber carb, you can get a K&N carb cap that can be bought from www.summitracing.com i think. It just makes it so you can weld on some mandrel bent steel or use rubber hose again...

I saw something similar on a drag car, it was used for a blow-through turbo setup....on an 8 second RX-3
And it was polished....

while there is no huge hp increase, I discovered an increase in throttle response. Punch it and the engine gets more air immediately, not a half second later.

Sorry to Post-Jack,

But how exactly do you go about cleaning a K&N? I got one for free when I bought the new-to-me carb, but it's kinda... dirty. I heard that you could clean them but I thought that you needed the K&N Cleaner Kit thingy.. Can I just run the hose over it? put it in the dishwasher? What?

Jon

You have to buy the cleaner kit. Cause they have this cleaner **** you throw on it, than you use the hose to clean it from the inside of the filter. Once it's dry, K&N airfilters use an oil to help filter the air before its used in the engine, mainly keeping bugs and **** from penetrating the filter i guess, sooooo with your cleaner kit comes the oil! Spray it on, let it soak in the filter. You should be set. I dont know what would happen if you just sprayed it with a hose liberally or threw it in the dishwasher...might not be a result you want...especially on a 60dollar filter!

K&N filters are fine IMO. A big reason why you wash from the inside out using normal tap pressure is so the knap on the element does'nt get screwed up. Wash from the outside-in and you push the knap down, allowing more **** to pass through. Wash from inside out you push the knap back out, so the element 'stands up' helping airflow and trapping debris. The oil should also start from inside out, then lightly coat the outside. Too much oil causes the filter to clog too soon.

I had a drop-in K&N for the airbox feeding my 13B. Natch, it's a vastly different K&N model than the ones used by the 12A set, but every bit as effective.
