If I remove the air pump what do I do with the hose that exits...Do I just plug it and what will it affect. the outlet of the pump goes into a thinggy above the thermal reactor. Will everything run right or???

The thermal reactor is cooled by the air pump. If you remove it, your thermal reactor may overheat, causing the inner core to break up. Or, after you shut the motor off, heat will transfer back into the motor through the exhaust port. If an apex seal is "parked" in the exhaust port window, the apex seal spring can be damaged. Please don't remove your airpump when the thermal reactor is being used. When you get a header, you can safely make it (and a host of other crap) go away.

the air pump also pumps air into the exaust system to help with the emmisions...i have not had one for years and i have not had any problems. im my oppinion it is a little thing that may help emmisions a little but hurts HP alot. if you take it off...cut a section of a broom handle...stuff it in a piece of hose and clamp the hose on to the place the air pump used to attach to and bam...your all set

Good piece of information about the thermal reactor and header. I'll wait until I get a header to remove it. So After I remove it just plug the hole where the pump attached to and thats it. no other mishaps by pluggin this air inlet???

thanks again

If you're talking about the hole in the air cleaner, I just used a cork from a wine bottle to plug it.

select the tutorial link and download it to disk. Don't view it in the browser as it tends to have issues.

You can take the link below and right-click and select download to disk.

ftp://ftp2.totalimmage.com/ti/Tutorial_1.pdf

Cheers.

im guessing the thermal reactor was designed to stay hot and thats why it would overheat and headers wont. that makes sense sinse its supposed to sustain a continous combustion inside it...also its called the THERMAL reactor. when i got my car the air pump was disconnected and it had an acv block off plate on it. however, i cant tell if it has a thermal reactor or not. its definatly not aftermarket headers but i cant tell if its the reactor or just a regular stock exhaust manifold. any key features for me to look for to figure out what i have?

Thermal reactors were only used on '79-'80 (SA) models here in the US. Catalytic converters replaced the thermal reactor/heat exchanger setup in '81. A word of warning, the airpump also supplies cooling air to the catalytic converters, so don't remove the airpump if you still have the catalytic converters.

That's what I was getting at in my first reply. Everyone is making it sound like the air pump only pumps to the thermal reactor. The air pump supplies air to THREE places, at least that what I thought (via the ACV)......

1. from idle to 3000rpms, air is injected into the exhaust
ports
2. 3000+rpms air is vented into the air cleaner
3. at some other times it can be injected into the cat

is that wrong?

whats the point of injecting air into the air cleaner? it takes the air from the air cleaner in the first place and then puts it back? why not just have one spot in the exhaust manifold/thermal reactor that gets an air supply all the time. this way you eliminate the acv and the thermal reactor and cats get fresh air?

i think the guy who had the car before me took out the cat and put in a presilencer and took out the stock muffler and put in a power pulse one....now why wouldnt he just get the complete racing beat exhaust instead?
