k & n air filter worth the $52?

Hey guys, I'm thinking about picking up a k & n air filter. I'm kinda low in funds right now (damn college summer classes) and was wondering if they are really worth the $52 or whatever they are... what do you guys who have gotten them think... worth it?

you can get the k&n for about 38.99 at partsamerica.com and as for the cone.. open element air filters always are better for performance than the closed kind like we got now.

some of you guys talk about the hot engine bay being an issue... is it so big of an issue that I won't gain performance?

also, I have a custom exhaust that is essentially a header to straightpipe to muffler (no cats)

I got no noticeable difference with the K&N on my RX7, but a very noticeable difference on my Fiesta. So I think it really depends on the car and how well the original filter flows relative to the engine's NEED.

What good is a filter that will flow 1000 cfm of air on a carb which flows 465?

there's no substitute for quaility......yet if you are low on funds it wouldn't hurt to have a cheaper one, probably not......much....difference for the money you save.

I hate messing with cleaning those. Mine went in the trash this spring. Skip it. It may clean great, but there is no difference in power for my car from the K&N to the cheap paper one. I'd rather dispose than have to re-oil, but then I don't drive my RX alot.

Thumbs up K&N air filter

I converted my old A12 and my B13 to these filters, mainly because they are permanent and save filter replacement dollars over their lifetime. The incease in performance seemed most notable on the carb model, because it always seemed to run lean when the filter was dirty. The FI model doesn't have that characteristic but it idles very nicely with this filter.

He meant SRD20DT......for what it's worth, here's what I observed, regarding the K&N air filter. In the "Furious" Rex thread, the dyno showed a 5 HP gain for the air flapper mod done to a stock air cleaner box. That run, however, was done with a new, clean paper Fram air filter. I observed a jump in the mpg that is duly noted in the same thread from an avg of 16.3 mpg, before the mod, to 17.5 mpg attributed mainly to the mod. I just finished cleaning the K&N air filter a week ago and got my first gas of tank average back to crunch some numbers yesterday....17.98 mpg....that's what a K&N air filter is worth, 0.48 more miles per gallon consumed....if I use a tank a week (14.0 gallons avg per week for me currently...), that comes out to $38.94 per year savings from the air filter change (cost of running a new paper Fram vs. running the K&N circular air filter) alone if you pay $1.95 for a gallon of 87 octane. It will pay for itself in a year and a half's worth of use IOW and prolly give you a little more HP, but I haven't gone back to the dyno to substantiate that part yet...

yes, it is rediculously loud. But my muffler might be shot because I think it's still the original. Once I get home from summer school and get back to work, a new muffler is definitely in the works.

But I think I'm going to try the k & n air filter (non-cone) before I do anything...
