just sent my 13b off to be ported

well its a 85 gsl se and i bought it and a week later blew the motor so i sent it off to a guy thats been working on 7s for a long time.

My question is hes porting it as well and he thinks its gonna run a little lean. now im pretty new to this rotary stuff but hes not and he told me to get some sort of air fuel controller but he never specified which one.

Now im familiar the SAFCII after playing with it forever in my supra but i don't know how to set that up for the rx7. or i was also looking at the greddy emanage but Ive never used one.

if you guys have any other suggestions id be happy to hear them. im just trying to keep cost under 400$

Standalone ECUs for under $400? Your only options are MegaSquirt or buying used. There aren't any piggyback units for the GSL-SE.

He probably swapped in a 2nd gen motor.

I'd ask to be sure that those will work with the GSL-SE ECU. I didn't think there were any that did. I might well be wrong, though for that price I'd personally just as soon go with a pre-assembled MegaSquirt anyway.

anyone know a good place to buy one cuz it seems like most other fuel managment systems that require multiple peices depending on what car you have and is there a spacific one that i should get. i saw an earlier post about three versions we could use but on the websites i found to buy it there is no explanation of what version they are. keep in mind its an 85 gsl se i dont care if it works on any other motor i just wanna know if it will work on mine.

Has your guy worked on EFI rotary engines before? I ask because the ECU has some capability to match fuel to intake air volume in closed-loop mode (i.e., 5th gear).

If he thinks it'll run lean, it may just be a belief he has based on working on 12a's. Mazdatrix doesn't recommend trying to port '6'-port 13b's, as there's not a lot of benefit to doing so, and the intake timing that Mazda built in with the SE engines (and thereafter) is enough for the engine displacement to retain good flow characteristics.

If you're certain the car is running lean when you get it back, one potential low-cost solution would be to remove the AFM cover and 're-time' the spring which controls the flapper door with a lighter spring. This would allow the door to open wider with the same amount of airflow, forcing the ECU to think that there's more air coming in than actual, and thus bump up injector duty cycle to match. This is a ghetto way of getting more fuel, but would work fine if you don't want to shell out $$$ for a stand-alone fuel mix computer to run your injection.

Just something to think about. Personally, I would be surprised if you got a wideband O2 on there and saw it was really running lean after a mild street port.

Just thinking out loud, but you might also be able to use the fuel pressure regulator to your advantage and run it at the high pressure setting all the time instead of low pressure for certain RPM and load... That would get you a little more flow for at least low RPM conditions.
