Question it just quit

I was looking into buying a first gen rx7
the guy who is selling it does not know what is going on with the car just said it ran fine but one day he started it and was listening to it and it just stopped.
it didn't slow down and die or anything just a dead stop like that.
didn't make any noises either or loud booms

any ideas on what it could be

he was able to tow the car and when he put it in gear the tires just left skid marks so it seems like the motor froze but how?

maybe carbon lock up?

if you can get it for a cheap ( I mean like less than $500 ) and it is decent condition why not. You can try the "soak it in ATF MMO or whatever" trick and see if it unlocks. or if you can get it cheap enough the parts may be worth more than the car!

just my $.02

I was thinking that also and to do the ATF trick
though I didn't think carbon would lock the motor up while it is running
I mean the way he was telling it to me is the car was running then just locked up in an instant. I thought the carbon would lock it up while cranking or something like that and not while running
could be wrong though
the car is in perfect shape though xcept for the motor locking up.
he only wants 550 for it

kinda want a first gen to tinker with and that way if my 87 sport goes down I still can drive a rex

when he was towing it, he left the thing in gear? You said it left tire marks, and I don't see how it would do that unless he left it in gear, OR something in the tranny broke and locked up (which would cause it to stop dead in an "instant" like he said). Trannies are cheap, I have 10 of 'em Considering all the blown motors out there, you can find a 100k tranny that's just fine.

the car was in gear yes
but when the motor quit working it was in nutral. he can not even get the car to start anymore
the motor does not even try to move
I think he even said something about trying to move the e-shaft by with some tool he had and the thing would not move a bit
something in the motor itself froze up not the tranny
I just do not have any idea what it could be

Try pushing it and putting in Reverse. Go for a few feet in reverse, then go back to a forward gear.

Don't move the car too fast, if you do have someting jammed in the engine, you dont wanna trash the housings, rotors, or seals, if they are intact.

you could pull the starter in case that is the prob. that way you could also see the flywheel. try to turn the engine over with a breaker bar and a deep 19mm socket on the front pulley.

Just my $.02

It sounds like it chucked a seal. Try the ATF and hope it's carbon lock....
