Thumbs up Just bought an RX7!!

I recently picked up a 1985 RX7-GSE with a 5 speed. Some guy had it behind his house for roughly 4 years, and he hauled it to the road with a $100 sign in the window. I currenntly own a 84 full sized mercury wagon so i was looking for a good second car project, and this was it. I got him down to $50, and brought a battery, some gas, and a can of ether and it fired right up; but poorly because it sat. So far, I cleaned the card, replaced the air filter, and am about to replace the fuel filter. Ive never owned a rotory motor before but ill be reading these posts for awhile. Any advice is welcome!

Good find! GREAT price! You soon will find out that the GSL-SE is arguably the most desired 1st gen model due to the bigger brakes, larger wheels, better suspension, more common bolt pattern, 13B FI engine, etc.

I wish you luck with your project, and lets see some pictures .

Welcome to the world of RX-7's and their wonderful rotary engines! As a project car, the RX-7, in my opinion, is an extremely enjoyable and easy car to work on. Ya picked a good one!

As someone new to rotaries I would suggest that you grab your favorite beverage, pull up to your monitor and read Felix's Own General Rotary Engine FAQ. There is a TON of excellent info on that site.

First thing: change ALL the fluids: engine, brakes, transmission, diff, clutch, everything. Might want to put some gas dryer in the tank. Change the fuel filter. Start adding MMO to the gas: 2oz per tank, then work up to 8oz per tank.

Nice buy. Does the car have a big blue air cleaner on the top? If so, you've got the 12A powered RX-7, if the motor is FI, then you've got an even better deal, the 13B powered SE model, which is a more powerful car. Either way, you've scored a great deal. These cars are addictive as hell, and a hoot to drive.

You'll also find that the community here on the 1st Gen forum is very welcoming and quick to lend a hand. Also check out www.mazspeed.com for more 1st gen specific technical articles and how-tos.

Yea I havent driven it since I had to drive it home, because of all the old fluids and such. Without pushing it however, I noticed one it got around 50 it would just die off, and if i stop and sit for a few seconds it would run fine again. After that I didnt even try to hit 50, but Id assume it was the fuel filter. Im just waiting for the next check to roll in before I get the fluids changed. The tires hold air for a few days,. but I think they succumbed to dry rot from sitting. I already purchased a can of carb cleaner, new air filter, and a fuel filter. I have yet ti put on the fuel filter, but ill do that before too long. Keep the advice comin!

Oh and yes, its the 12A motor, carbed, 4 wheel disc brakes, LSD, and a nifty fuel pump switch under that dash. Plus the fuel guage doesnt work.
