Talking Just Bought my first FB!

So after not having an rx7 for over a year after the troubles with my 87 n/a I just bought a 84 GSL 5 speed. Its black with Grey interior and black carpet. Its got 54,000 origional miles with 30k on a rebuilt motor. The body has no rust and the underbody has very little surface rust. I picked it up for $1,950. I will post some pics in the next few days. I have been reading and searching lots of threads and websites but I would like to know what type of modification it would take to achieve 200hp n/a. I was thinking of swapping a turbo 2 motor but I just cant pull such a great motor out of the car. I recently did a compression test on it and it has well over 110 compression on all 3 faces for both rotors. Any help or tips on how to modify my 12a would be greatly apreciated thanks!

welcome to the 1st gen side. Since you said you will post pictures later, i will let you slide.

Search the forums, thats the best and only advice i will give you. the "what can make me 200hp n/a" has been asked dozens of times..... weekly. to make it short for ya, heavy streetport, bridgeport, j bridge, or PP.

Nice find. However, getting 200HP out of a 12A is not gonna happen without some major porting, or a turbo conversion.
In my opinion, 200HP isn't needed to really enjoy these cars.

Honestly, with such a low mileage body/engine and being is as good as condition as you describe, it would be a shame to tear it down and rebuild. The only way you will get 200 hp is a complete rebuild with heavy porting, with which you will lose some streetability.

Start with the basic mods, exhaust and intake, drive it for a while, then decide.

Welcome to the 1st gen section and the Darkside.

Thanks for all the replys. Yeah I figured that 200 hp would be pretty difficult without porting. I guess I just needed to hear it from you guys. I was looking at the Holley 450 that racing beat has for sale and it says that with open headers its a 40 hp gain. I think I might go headers, lighter flywheel, intake, 2.5 inch exhaust, and maybe put that holley 450 on in the summer. You guys think that should be good for at least 160 hp? I want to make a good daily driver as well as a good autocross/drift car. Before I do all does mods I am of course first going to make sure the car runs like it should.

i hope you arnt going full open headers. that will hurt your ears if you come anywhere past 1/4 throttle. I plan on having a motorized bypass after my header, so I can flick a switch and be open header and close it the same way, while still maintaining a quiet exhaust note.

I actually ran open headers at the auto shop in my college today just to see what it would sound like. Man does it sound sweet! I just dont think that I would be able to drive past 2k rpm without being pulled over !

160 hp, no, not with exhaust and intake only, 140 hp is more likely. If you plan on autocrossing, I would stay away from the Holley and find a good 2 barrel Weber or Mikuni.

Keeping it stock is best for a daily driver. Maybe a little help with the cats, exhaust and some ignition and carb stuff, but why mess with a 12A, one of the sweetest engines ever built?

Welcome to the club!
