Unhappy Jumpy going from deceleration to acceleration

I've had this problem slightly on and off, but it was most noticable tonight. Its not a cold night - anyway I'm driving along a smooth street and testing out a few things. I'm in second gear and ive taken my foot off the pedal, she's decelerating nicely. Next I put my foot on the pedal. First thing I notice here is that there is a distinct lag between putting my foot down, and the car taking off. Then either as a result of me being tired, or the car having some sort of issue, theres a bit of jumpy hesitation before accelerating again. This is around 1500-2500 rpm. Just after I put my foot down too (not too far), after the lag, theres a little sharp noise that comes from the back, possibly the rear left. It could be exhaust backfiring(rear right), or perhaps something to do with the fuel pumps (they are on the rear left)...

Any ideas about this issue?

Cheers!

Check out the accelerator pump. It acts like a squirt gun when you depress the throttle and squirts raw fuel into the barrels. Run a search for "accelerator pump" and you will find plenty of info on this problem.

Had a tune-up lately? Plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, air filter, etc. Lots of possibilities. Good luck.

Happened again tonight, this time after quite a thrashing around a damn sweet windy hill climb! Oh the exhilaration!

Anyway after the extreme thrashing, trying to drive normally (slowly) again as above it decelerates fine, but then i push on the accelerator a bit, and there is no response until i feel the secondaries start to open.

Just as the secondary butterflies start to open, the car backfires (which I can only hear because theres a leak in the cat. (got a very restrictive muffler at the back temporarily)...

The fuel filter is fine. I have noted on some days the EFI pump makes some weird straining noises, but I checked when I got home and it wasn't doing that.

The dizzy rotor and contact points I just cleaned days ago. The spark plugs are in good condition and clean. Spark plug wires new. Air filter is a pod filter and flow is fine.

When thrashing or normal temperature is at a quarter the way up (normal) and oil pressure is excellent.

One thing I must note is fuel in the oil. The oil seems runnier than it should be, it pretty black and smells more like fuel than oil. Still I dont think that would be part of this problem.. ?

Any thoughts would be great! Cheers

Throttle position sensor? From my understanding some of the classic signs of a faulty tps is that hesitation on soft acceleration which can be overcome with more throttle. Right now I have the same situation on my 84 SE, but w/o the funky noises. Since it is an off/on thing, it's not bothering me enough right now to try my extra tps to see if thats really the problem.

Ahhh that sounds right! Because when the TPS is fully extended the secondaries start to open. I'll do some testing

Cheers!

If I am on the money, you can repay me with a Sheaf stout. If you find it to be something else, you can still send me a Sheaf stout.

I meant to ask what "thrashing" means? Through the use of the word in your sentences, I would say it is another word for "hotdogging".

I dont know what hotdogging means, but to me, thrashing means excessive rpm. 4000-7000

I usually drive under 4000 to keep fuel consumption down heh.

I burned 10 litres in 3km last night. Quite a thrashing :P
