Angry J.Oliver universal will NOT bind!!!

I cant get into it right now but the universal joint on the rack and pinion kit will not bind, bend or do funny backflips it will rotate like it was orig. designed to do. This does'nt mean anything to most of you but if makes you feel any better a do have an engineering degree and I have never found the "Universal" joint to be a very puzzling piece of engineering. Have any of you?
WoooooooooooooHooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: D

thanks and big relief

J. Oliver:

Thanks for the update!! Although I was a true believer, I was still fighting the doubts over this one point. In the pics, the angle does look quite severe...

Question: Is that angle close to what the Golf/Rabbit rack is using in the OEM application? Enquiring minds want to know.

Yes very similar. CP.Racing came over last night and we spent a few hours going over the whole install process for him to be able to take it back to the shop and put it on. The car should be ready by tonight. Chris was here and saw with his own eyes that the system works and does NOT bind. The car is also going on the track through the twistys in a big way. One interesting point was discovered last night, the VW tie rod ends seem to be the same as the RX7. Same dia. same length and heres the kicker, IT HAS THE SAME FREAKIN TAPER!!!!!!!
Also the RX7 castle nut even screws on! Go figure.

that is great to here. Have you come up with the final cost yet? I know you mentioned $200, just wondering if it is still around that price.

ok, please don't get mad and tell me to go read the thread cause i can't find the answeres there, but i have a few questions.
1. how exactly does the rack interface with the Fb's steering column? (pics would really help here)
2. What year rabbit rack do we have to look for
3. How much ground clearence is there compared to stock?
4. Are the tie rods level when its all installed?

ok 82transam.. I'm not getting mad, but... there are some very nice pics of the set-up (INSTALLED) that show all of the concerns you might have, on the other string.. try page 3, 4, 5.

If you read the string.. which I'm not sure you have... most if not all of your questions will be answered.

If I had to do it... why not you...

1. how exactly does the rack interface with the Fb's steering column? (pics would really help here)
A. See pics

2. What year rabbit rack do we have to look for

3. How much ground clearence is there compared to stock?
A. looks the same as OEM

4. Are the tie rods level when its all installed?
A. yes, it looks like it.

Again see the other string.. unless someone wants to post all of the info here...

BTW, are you on a dial-up? If so, I feel for you!

Hey Bern, your hired!!!!
Berns my new spokesperson.
82Transam, I dont ever get mad, sorry if I gave you that impression. Any A1 chassis rabbit, jetta, scirroco will do. Ground clearance approx. 1 inch lower than stock. The tie rods sit very level.
AND I AM ON DIAL UP...OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, its not just me guys, a bunch of people i talk to who are on here are just as confused as me. And we've read the thread, yes all of it. the pics don't help as to how it connects to teh FB steering column, you say we have to cut off a few inches, this would leave us with a metal shaft, how is the u joint or whatever it is actually attached to the shaft?
I know zilch about VW's, what years constitute A1?

J, I'm very excited about this project of yours, and I'm definitely a potential customer (pending testing time).
The streering is the worst part of an Rx-7...an otherwise terrific machine. You've done such a great job and we should all be thankful. (I hope we're demonstrating as such.)

I can sympothize with 82TA, as I will need to read through the other thread a couple more times to finally "get it".
It would be helpful when all is finished if you could find a free picture host site and post the installation steps, ect.

...Heh heh- that is, when ya got nuthin ta do, ya know!

OK, I was in a crappy mood yesterday, so my posts might have come off as sounding pissed (cause i was) but I'm a little calmer today. I think the part thats confusing me is the fact that the other thread it 11 pages long and spans several weeks. The design seems to have changed a few times in that time, basically making the older pics useless. I guess you could figure it all out, but i don't think a brief explanation all in one post of what all those pics are of would be too much to ask.
